water in mask

Post by abotvini » Thu May 14, 2009 4:59 pm

I have a resmed s7 with an HumidAire 2i humidifier. It rercently started condensing water in the mask and in the air tube(can hear a gurgling noise). Anyone have the same problem/or solution

I have that problem. I bought a "snuggie" that keeps the warm air in the tube from cooling as it goes through, and it seems to help keep the condensation down a little. Also turned down the humidifier from 4 to 3, although I prefer 4. If there are any other ideas, I'd love to hear too...

What you are experiencing is called "rainout" and a lot of us have had those problems in the past. For me, a fleece hose cover for both my long hose and the shorter hose on my mask, made all the difference in the world. There are other solutions that work also.

Here is just one of many links that can help you:

our-collective-cpap-wisdom/CPAP-humidif ... inout.html

You can also use the search function located at the top of the page and search "rainout" and find a lot more on the subject.

I had that problem last night. I put on the mask, turned on my machine and was hit in the face with some water. Got REALLY grossed out so I did what my rep told me to do. Turned off the humidifier and turned on the blower. Let it run for a few min and this morning I hung it from the shower rod. Hopefully it will dry out if it needs too. I don't care how long it had been in there to me it was gross.!!!
Pressure set at 15
Ramp:20 min starts at 4.5.

Every morning when I get up, I hang my hose over the shower and there is never any moisture in it when I take it down to go to bed. So that's a great way to be sure it is dry by the time you need to use it again.

The water can actually come from both directions in water that orriginated from the humidifier which condensed out.
Also your humid breath can condense in the mask.

I run my humidifier with no heat anymore in "passover" mode.
I still find an occasional small puddle in the tube near my mask just before time to get up.

To prevent condensation:
Lower the humidity in the air by lowering the humidifier setting OR
prevent the cooling of the air after it leaves the humidifier by insulating it OR
by heating it in a heated hose.

Good luck,
TerryB
