I have been lurking around this site for a few weeks now and have learned a lot. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2000, put on cpap. Had 3 sleep studies. The 4th one was in March, got new bipap in April. I feel like since I had to be put on bipap that my apnea has gotten worse over the years or maybe I wasn't titrated(is that how you spell it)correctly in the first place.
I have a Resmed Vpap III, pressure at 17/14. The DME gave me a comfort select nasal mask, but I had one of those before and could not stand it. So I ask the doctor for a script for a ultra mirage full face mask, what I use now. The DME said that the ultra mirage full face would not work with the bipap because of the high pressure. I have used a ultra mirage full face mask with a cpap pressure of 18. The only nasal mask that I have ever been able to tolerate is the simplicity and that was on a cpap pressure of 12. Sorry this is such a long post but is this Vpap III a good machine? And the full face mask working with the high pressure, it works for me. Any thoughts?

Hi,
Glad to see you've posted, and you were not rambling.
Hey, I'm the Queen of rambling. You can't do any worse.
I have a bipap and started in November, with 18/14, so it's close to yours. I've not had a full face mask yet. My doctor poo-pood it, saying it wouldn't work because of the shape of my face. (I have a hunch the real reason is he's set in his ways on the machine and mask he prefers, I suspect everyone gets the same thing). But I'm always interested in hearing how things work for other people who have the same type of machine and pressures. My nose mask stuggles at the high pressures. I want to invest in another mask eventually, maybe two. I'd like a full face one more as a backup for those stuffed up days. So it's worked fine for you? That's great!
I don't have the same bipap machine, mine's Respironics Pro with c-flex. So I can't answer your question. But good luck.
Linda

I'm on a Respironics Synchrony BiPAP ST for Central Sleep Apnea- I've used it a little over a year. I tried a VPAP II STA but it didn't work for me but I have a very unusual case of central apnea. A lot of people use the VPAP III with great results for OSA.
As for full face masks some stuff I've read has said the exact opposite- that BiPAP users need full face mask because nasal only masks wouldn't work properly. Most of that seemed to be related to early research but even a ResMed sales represenative mentioned it in a chat at TAS when the Mirage Activa was released in late 2003. I've always used nasal masks in the 18 months I've been on BiPAP & the past year I've used nasal pillows almost exclusively starting with Breeze then Comfortlite, Snapp, and finally settleing on the Swift nasal pillows. I've tried using a regular nasal mask again and can't stand them. The only thing with a higher pressure & full face masks would be keeping it sealed but that would be an issue on a straight CPAP too so I say use what works for you.
