Does your cpap make you feel inflated?

Post by Axlrose » Thu Mar 21, 2019 11:59 pm

Wondering if anyone gets this feeling? My cpap makes me feel kind of like I need to burp out a bunch of air in the morning. Lungs feel kind of bloated. I know it's forcing air, so maybe that's a byproduct? Or maybe that means the air pressure isn't right?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Welcome to the forum.

It's called aerophagia and fairly common. Sometimes mildly annoying and sometimes extremely uncomfortable and makes a person ill.

wiki/index.php/Aerophagia

There are some things that can be done to reduce it. Adding in exhale relief is the first one I usually suggest if it's available.

What machine brand and model are you using? What are your current settings? If we had more information we could maybe offer more specific ideas to help reduce the problem if it is more than mildly annoying.

My auto set was @ 18 and I got that feeling> i had it lowered to 17, not a noticeable change. Asked the doctor for 15 and all seems better now. YMMV

I've got mine set to inflate to 35 psi -- same as my tires. :D

For years I had this problem. I noticed it my first night in the sleep lab. Sometimes Bilevel therapy helps. I've worked with my Dr to adjust to settings where I did not experience this discomfort. Sometimes I needed to reduce my pressure below what I needed but I could not tolerate it higher. As I get new xPAPs now and then, I can't say exactly what changed. xPAPS use different algorithms. And I'm different as I age.

My first advanced ovarian cancer symptom was, in fact, a severe case of aerophagia from my auto bilevel xPAP. I thought of calling 911. Then it happened again one month later and I wanted to call 911 again but did not. My belly was so full of air from the CPAP I thought my intestines would explode. Really, I was in that much pain. What I learned later was going on was that I had a belly full of fluid and it made it so I did not have sufficient room to breathe properly. This was an extreme case, a rare case. I mention it here because ovarian cancer is so darn difficult to diagnose. If one woman is helped by this post to be mindful of abdominal bloating then my discomfort with posting is worthwhile.

Aerophagia. We all have to suffer it to some degree. Stands to reason when we're being inflated all night. APAP can help reduce it but, other than that, all you can do is make sure you're using no more pressure than you have to.

The relevant sphincter(s) can presumably stay closed until a critical pressure is reached, at which point I'm guessing it is forced open. I can sometimes feel this happening as my pressure rises during the ramp period.

It is important to deal with this however, especially if you're getting on in years. As we all know, once you pass 60, you can never completely trust a fart

Not at all true, most don't suffer from it at all. Unfortunate for the minority that do suffer from it, but a minority nonetheless.

Yes sometimes. Let your Dr /Sleep Specialist look at your Rise time air flow on your machine. I struggled alot with it.Turns out my Rise time was set for an overweight guy that I wasn't(it was at 500). Sometimes when you pick up weight or loose weight it can change. Once my Sleep technician changed mine (after I made them aware of it) down I felt alot better. There are no reasons to suffer. Make them aware of it

Rise time is something I haven't come across yet. What is that exactly and how can I check mine?

Your machine doesn't have it, and it doesn't really have any affect on aerophagia.
