new mask spiked events per hour?

Post by wrath » Sun Aug 16, 2015 8:24 am

I switched from a nasal mask with chin strap to a full nose & mouth mask this week.
I use a Resmed AirSense 10
The next day, & for the next 9 days after that, the events per hour tripled.
Is this related to the different style mask?
Doe the pressure need to be adjusted since the volume of the new mask is so much more than the old mask?
Nothing else was changed except the mask.

Thanks

Sometimes people find out that more pressure is needed when using a full face mask as opposed to nasal mask. Not everyone though.
"Events tripled" doesn't really tell us much because we don't know which events tripled and how much was the "tripling"...was it tripled going from 1 to 3 or 10 to 30?
What tripled? If it were centrals then we wouldn't increase the pressure.

The events per hour posted on the MyAir dashboard went from under 5/hr to over 15/hr on average since I switched to the new mask.
I like the new mask because the chin strap I used with the old mask would always fall off.
I'm not sure what you mean by "central"
I appreciate the reply & help.

There's a lot more to the data available than what you see on the MyAir website.
AHI is composed of 3 types of events.
Central apneas (where the airway is open but there's no air flow)
Obstructive apneas (where the tissues in the airway are blocking air flow)
Hyponeas (where the tissues in the airway are partially blocking the air flow)

I would suggest that you get the software so you can see in more detail what is really going on.

When you have time please add your equipment to your profile like I have mine.
Right now I know you have a ResMed machine because you mention MyAir and I know that means Resmed.

AHI going from 5 to 15...need to figure out for sure what is happening and deal with it. Most likely more pressure is needed but a more in depth evaluation is needed to know what to do and how to go about it.

Thank you for the link. I will download it & analyze the data when I have a bit more time.

I have downloaded the software & data from the SD card. I don't know what I am looking at.

A screen shot of the stats is available, but I don't see the command to attach a file to this reply.

Thanks.

Check the settings on your machine. Go to Mask and check whether it is set to pillows, full face or nasal. It changes the amount of pressure depending on which type of mask you are using. If this doesn't resolve the problem, you likely need a different mask. While you can see variations when you first switch, after NINE days, that tells me that the mask doesn't fit you very well.

The mask selection choice on the ResMed machines does NOT change the pressure on the ResMed machines.
Instead the mask selection choice mainly affects how the large leak is calculated.

Thanks SewTired. Just changed it from nasal to full face. Ran a mask fit & it said Good with a green happy face.
Will see how tonight goes.
I appreciate the help.

this is the last night with old mask:

On the pie chart, I am seeing a big difference in OA, CA, & H.

I appreciate your patience.

Based on Pugsy's comments I went back to the nasal mask w/chin strap last night.
Wow, what a difference in the data:
OA: from 35 obstructive events to 0
CA: from about 22% to about 80%

thanks for the help, looks like the mask is the issue.
