Thanks gvz - I worked through your very clear directions and it worked great! I now have Respiratory Rate AND Tidal Volume. Now I just have to get my head around what all these graphs mean LOL.

Your help is much appreciated!

Cheers,
xena

Has anyone else seen a very close relationship between respiratory rate and heart rate? (Using a CMS-50e, but it shouldn't matter the model.) I'm using EDFbrowser. I'm able to put the oximetry data on the same graph time by opening the CSV file from SPO2Review, then saving as tab delimited, then converting ASCII text (2 columns, starts on line 2) to EDF and then opening the EDF.

Absolutely! It creates the High Frequency (HF) Heart Rate Variation band (an undulation that runs between 0.15 and 0.4 Hz).

Great job.

btw, for the S9 data for TV, after you adjust the scale, just multiply by 1000 in your head.
Thanks to your help, gvz!

LOL, hey I don't have a clue what I'm looking at yet, specially the TV - I need to do some studying to understand what I'm looking at.

Cheers,
Xena

So do you plan to explain or are you going to leave us hanging?

Oh, all right:

The heart speeds up during inhalation and slows during exhalation. To calculate and graph this, If you measure the distance between the tops of the EKG signal (the "r" in the QRS Complex), you come up with a time (since it's short, express it in milliseconds) and voila! the undulation becomes apparent (the ECG R-R waveform).

Thanks, Not Muffy. I knew about the phenomenon, but I never heard it called
High Frequency (HF) Heart Rate Variation band
before. Now I've learned another new phrase that I'll probably forget due to lack of a reason to ever use it.

The non-sleep people call it Sinus Arrhythmia. However, HF HRV doesn't get the press coverage that Low Frequency gets. LF is the phenomenon used to track sleep-related breathing events.

See Thomas and Gilmartin.

LF (Low Frequency) is the phenomenon used to track sleep-related breathing events.
The LF effect can be seen as we move back from the 2 minute view to a 5 minute view. Looking at the ECG R-R waveform, the HF oscillations are superimposed on a more pronounced LF oscillation that is clearly associated with the obstructive apnea events:

The concept of cardiopulmonary coupling is highly relevant to current diagnostic methodology of sleep-related breathing disorders, so this post should not be dismissed as as an simple excuse to point out how the Oklahoma Sooners ROSE UP FROM THE ASHES TO CLUB THEM LYIN', CHEATIN', WHININ' NEBRASKA CORNHUSKER TRAITORS UPSIDE THE HEAD WITH THEIR OWN "OH WE'RE SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU SO WE'RE TAKIN' OUR TOYS AND GOING TO THE BIG 10" 'TUDE SO WHERE ARE YOU NOW YOU BUNCH OF @#%!*%! Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this timely and interesting topic.

Go Oklahoma Sooners!

...I meant SDB methodology related to cardiopulmonary coupling.
