obstruction occurs while still awake?
obstruction occurs while still awake?
Sometimes when I'm trying to fall a sleep but still awake in bed I will feel an obstruction occur near back of my throat for a second or two.
* Is this common?
* Anyway to figure out what is collapsing? i.e. tongue, uvula, tonsils ect. (I can confirm that the front of my tongue has not moved but not sure if there is a back flap or something)
* If I am feeling the obstruction while still awake does this mean that my EPAP min setting is not high enough?
Thanks!

"STILL AWAKE"??? Think about that one for a minute. This is called "Sleep Apnea" for a reason.Dave007 wrote:Sometimes when I'm trying to fall a sleep but still awake in bed I will feel an obstruction occur near back of my throat for a second or two.

I sometimes think I feel this while on my back just before turning on the CPAP and falling asleep - but it may just be my mind playing tricks on me.

Re: obstruction occurs while still awake?
I have felt this when not using cpap and sometimes when using a nasal mask, but I don't remember experiencing it with a FFM.Dave007 wrote:Sometimes when I'm trying to fall a sleep but still awake in bed I will feel an obstruction occur near back of my throat for a second or two.

How about Ramp? Is your therapy being reduced for a bit at the beginning of the night?

I have this problem just before entering sleep or if I try to aggressively blow my nose. I know . . .T M IDave007 wrote:Sometimes when I'm trying to fall a sleep but still awake in bed I will feel an obstruction occur near back of my throat for a second or two.

Aggressively blowing your nose?
I never do that! It messes up my ears!
Is that just me?

Nope, it's not just you! There are some things we learn to just avoid doing. One I avoid is pointing my toes down in bed and stretching - used to get horrible calf spasms.chunkyfrog wrote:Aggressively blowing your nose?

Re: obstruction occurs while still awake?
I'm awake enough to notice the collapse so I do not have to be 100% a sleep to notice this. It happens when I'm on my back or my side. (I know not to sleep on my back). Yes I do have ramp setting for 15 minutes and when I notice the collapse happening I disengage the ramp and start at full pressure settings.

Really? This is what I'm trying to figure out. I think I have apnea 24-7 too.

I know, it's not funny. Happens to me when I nod off in the daytime, which I do way too often... Did it today, sitting at a table listening to someone giving instructions to someone else...clunk!
Dave007-You might want to try doing without ramp (easier than you think), shortening the time of it, or raising the starting pressure for ramp a bit. Who needs that lovely choking snorking feeling?

It happens to me as well.... when I am about to fell asleep without the tube connected it is not as uncommon as you would think
Re: obstruction occurs while still awake?
I can relate to that as it used to happen before starting the CPAP therapy. There were occasions where I could hear my own snoring right in the middle of a conversation. It was so bad.I sometimes think I feel this while on my back just before turning on the CPAP and falling asleep - but it may just be my mind playing tricks

I've had patients talking to me while snoring and obstructing. To be conversing with me I'd say they are awakeWulfman... wrote:"STILL AWAKE"??? Think about that one for a minute. I don't have sleep apnea, but I do get this feeling (always while on my back). I'm awake and probably drifting and shock myself wide awake, feeling my throat close. Happens especially after sleeping tablets or a beer or 3.
You're possibly drifting (micro sleeps - these are small fragments of sleep, not continuous, seconds). It might feel like you're wide awake but maybe you aren't.
