My Bi-Pap broke and no Insurance. What are my options?

Post by FishOil » Sun Apr 05, 2015 4:59 am

My Bipap started making really loud horrible noises recently. I didn't really notice it until recently because it was very gradual, and if I moved it around a little, the noise would subside.

But the other night, it got louder than it ever has been, and no amount of moving around made it go away. It was so loud I couldn't sleep, so I emptied out a drawer in my bedside table and put it in there to muffle the sounds somewhat.

But then tonight, I went to turn it on, and all I smelled coming through the mask was a burnt rubber smell. So I'm guessing the motor is overheating or messing up or something.

I know I need a new one, the thing is, I've had this machine since 2011 and have used it every night since, but I lost my insurance in 2013 so I can't exactly go to the doctor and get a whole other study done. Also, I haven't been in contact with the provider of the bipap in like 2 years.

I was thinking of either getting this one repaired, or buying a new one.

Repair--Accurate Biomedical, http://www.acbio.com

Purchase--Postings on this site, Craiglist, and Secondwindcpap for used, cpap.com for new.

I would recommend getting a prescription. Any doctor or PA can write for you.

You could also contact secondwindcpap.com, they might have something in your range.

BiPAPs are crazy expensive these days... Accurate BioMed, mentioned above, will evaluate your machine and tell you if it's worth fixing. I've used them and their services are very good. The downside is you will be without your machine while they test it (it takes a few days to run the diagnostics)

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I would still contact the provider to see what they have to say. I go long stretches without being in touch with mine and that is only if I need to buy something. They have no idea if I am compliant. I hope you find a resolution. It must be scary to think of going without it...or at least frustrating. Good luck.

Sounds like you need a new blower. Send it off and get it repaired. It will probably be around $200.

Do you have a back up machine? If you have a system one cpap (your typical starter machine) use that.

If you want a brand new bipap machine and have about $1600, I could get you one.

Looks like you had a Series 50 machine. Secondwind has: Gently Used Respironics System One DS750 BIPAP Auto Machine for $719 including a Humidifier to go with it. Your old humidifier would not work with this newer machine.
Current Settings PS 4.0 over 10.6-18.0 (cmH2O) - Resmed S9 VPAP Auto w/h5i Humidifier - Quattro Air FFM
TNET Sleep Resource Pages - CPAP Machine Database
Put your equip in your Signature - SleepyHead v1.0.0-beta-1

I've already been sleeping without for the past few days. It's terrible, I wake up wheezing.

But I think repair is my only option since I can't afford such expensive machines.

If it can't be repaired, then I guess the bipap era of my life is over. It was great while it lasted.

Look at the online prices of new and used bipaps.
You may be surprised.

What are your prescribed pressures? Could you get by with an apap and exhale relief? There are machines like that in the $200 price range.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

If your child needs help, there is no "can't afford it", as most parents will move Heaven and earth to save this precious being.
Isn't it strange how we place so much less value on ourselves?

I'm not sure what my prescribed pressures are. On the machine the biflex is on 3
