Does anyone here use the Oracle oral mask??

Post by Tigerlily » Mon Mar 23, 2015 11:20 pm

I am a mouth breather, so I started out by using a FF mask. Too many leaks, couldn't use it at all. Then I tried a hybrid, it was better, but not quite right. I used a nasal mask which was very nice, except for the bad mark it left on my nose. I used the Tap Pap which was fairly good, but my fav has been the current Airfit P10 nasal pillows. But, I have to use a chinstrap or my leaks are too high. They tend to give me a headache and they slide around, they just aren't my cup of tea.

I'm intrigued by the idea of an oral only mask, but would like input from users of it or those who have used it in the past.
My mouth wants to be open naturally and I wouldn't have to wear a chinstap, but I am concerned about drool. I had a bit of a problem with that with the hybrid.

Here's a link to a forum search on "Oracle" for you to do some reading.

There are a few people who use them, but they come with their own set of "issues".

Maybe there are other things you can try to overcome the problems with your other masks.

I use the Oracle 452 mask exclusively.
To read about my experiences in coping with the various challenges related to this mask, see the link at the bottom of this post. If you want to try the mask and have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Note that a chin strap with this mask is a NO-NO. Use a soft cervical collar instead. With the collar, my normal leak rate is pretty close to zero.

There is some info in the Useful Links at the bottom of this post.

I was able to learn to use it without nose plugs. Basically, I put the mask on, and pretended like I was blowing up a balloon to seal off the back of my nose with my soft palate. I could then relax and the pressure would sort of hold my nose closed. YMMV

I found it irritated my throat due to dryness. I have a problem with that even with a nasal mask. I also found it uncomfortable to not breathe through my nose.

The Oracle does have some advantages and disadvantages.

"Not-quite-right" can most of the time be fixed with the right adjustments.

This helped me - wiki/index.php/Hybrid_Mask_Modifications
