Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
HI! I am not sure if anyone can answer this question but is it possible that having sleep apnea, complex sleep apnea in my case, can elevate inflammatory markers? I would love to see if anyone has had elevated blood inflammatory markers because of sleep apnea, controlled sleep apnea or not. Thanks so much!

Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
Can you explain a bit better please - I'm familiar with inflammation as a general marker for cardiovascular problems, including diabetes (metabolic syndrome), etc., and with apnea as a general component and possible cause of those as well, but never heard them connected to 'blood'... so wonder if you're talking about the same general stuff?
Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
Terri -- Two inflammatory markers are ESR (Sed Rate) and C-Reactive Protein, are these (or other blood tests) what you're referring to?

Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
It would stand to reason that apnea increases inflammatory markers. Inability to breathe causes a cascade of stress hormones and inflammation is a likely result.
You might try a search on pub med with the terms "hs crp" and "sleep apnea".

Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
I have had a high CRP for years and I chalked it up to obesity but looking back maybe it was sleep apnea. I have been on cpap for a year.
I'll ask my doctor to do another CRP and see if it went down.

Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
Was looking for some info I'd read prior but couldn't find it at the moment. Lot of studies on PubMed on the topic. I think I remember reading that sleep disruption in general can affect inflammatory markers. I haven't had mine tested lately, but a few years ago when my sleep apnea treatment was stable but my legs still disrupted my sleep greatly my CRP was very high, to the point the doctors thought something else could be going on. Now that you mention it, I'm curious how mine would look now.

Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
My hubby and I were subjects in the Brigham and Women's Hospital study on insulin and metformin's effect on c-reactive protein in T2 diabetics. I wonder if B&W has done any other studies on that marker. One would hope so.

Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
Thank you all for all your replies, this board is the best.
Yes, the inflammatory markers that I was talking about is Crp and Esr. When I said inflammatory markers in the blood I was talking about when a doctor runs blood/lab work and checks the cbc along with other things such as Crp and Esr. I wonder how many patients who have sleep apnea along with other medical conditions such as lupus sle, I have lupus, have been able to connect the dots that sleep apnea has been the cause of their elevated Crp & Esr. Hopefully that makes sense. It's been a long day..lol
Having lupus sle I get blood work about every 3 months or so and despite being on medication for lupus my Crp and Esr both are always chronically elevated. And they are pretty elevated. I am not sure why I thought that sleep apnea could be the reason but that's why I wanted to ask you all. I haven't checked out that other board but I will definitely go check it out. Thanks so much!

What in the heck did I do that caused me to reply as a guest? Sometimes using a cell phone makes it difficult to see what I am doing. I feel like a total dork..lol Oops! Sorry about that!

: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
I have rheumatoid arthritis. I have only been on CPAP for about a month so I don't know what effect it might have on the RA.
Re: Sleep apnea & inflammatory markers..
Cpap would have no effect on RA one way or the other - it's just air being blown in to help open your airway a little more - no connection!
And to TMJ Terri - 'SLE' is the abbreviation of the full name of lupus - Systemic Lupus Erythematosus - so no need to use it when talking about 'lupus'.

Yeah, I know the difference between sle and lupus. I just wrote that in case others were not familiar with lupus or the different types. I'm sure you know there are 4 types of lupus and so that's why I wrote that to specify the type of lupus that I have. But thank you for telling me.
