only slept 2hrs during sleep study

Post by Sunnie » Fri Mar 13, 2015 5:05 pm

Had a sleep study 2 weeks ago and only slept two hours. Dr. said I had many sleep apnea symptoms but needed six hours of sleep to confirm. He wants me to take another study and wants to prescribe me a small dose of Lunesta to help me sleep. My insurance does not cover Lunesta or its generic. Only Ambein or its generic. I am a little afraid of Ambein even once. Don't know what to do, insurance said is does cover Lunesta because its considered a hypnotic.

What is important is to get enough sleep so you can be properly diagnosed. Ambien is what they gave me for my sleep study and it is some good stuff! I have not used it since that day and am finally used to my machine!!

I thought I had read (on the forum some years ago) that two hours was the minimum, but could/would be adequate for diagnosis. You might want to ask your insurance provider about that.
I had a prescription for a sleeping pill, but they moved my sleep study up and I didn't have enough time to pick it up, so I did mine without a sleeping aid. It was a little rough, but I managed.

I've been taking generic form of ambein called zolpidem for a few years now but only take it when I need it and so far no issues taking it.

Many, many of us took one lousy Ambien for our studies and none that I know of had any bad side FX.

Whether your Insurance covers it or not...you only need 1 pill for the night.

That's all I slept on my first sleep study too. Yet they could glean a lot from it.

I did have to go a second time for a titration as I was confirmed Obstructive Sleep Apnea (severe).

I think had I been able to sleep more the first time, they might've started titration the first time,
but I was done sleeping. That was obvious.

So hopefully you still had some data they can glean stuff from. I know in my case as stated above,
they didn't need any more then a couple of hours to see I had an issue and needed help.

My doctor prescribed ambien, which was not covered by my insurance. I figured it was one very important night, and if anything happened, I would be monitored in a building next to the hospital. I paid the $10 for the single pill and used it for the sleep study.

I did not feel drugged, but I slept pretty well. Only woke up once during the 2 1/2 hour diagnosis phase, then slept over 5 hours straight with the cpap. It was well worth it.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Be sure that your insurance will pay for the second study.

2 hours is more than long enough to confirm sleep apnea for many patients. Maybe your results are inconclusive, but your doctor is probably just being a dick.

If your insurance will pay for the machine based on the 2 hours of sleep, any decent modern CPAP machine gives you a mini-micro sleep test every night, records the data, and can send the data to your doctor. Your doctor can make adjustments wirelessly to find the right pressure.

Many doctors have their head up their stethoscope on data from CPAP machines and insist on in-lab $leep $tudie$ in order to enrich their fellow members of the medical mafia.

Read the Useful Links in my signature at the bottom of this post for some useful information on not getting screwed by the medical mafia. If you end up getting a CPAP, be especially careful to read the info about dealing with the DME and what CPAP machines to get or avoid.

First sleep study didn't go well. I did three hours, awake for an hour, fell back asleep for two hours.
Doc was surprised as PLMD was 60 events per hour. Sat Oxygen dropped during that second period of sleep

Second sleep study was even better. Pretty much the same, but with CPAP (first time, had to adjust) but
with Oxygen the found my PLMD was 120 events per hours.

Parkinsons and Dystonia make it hard to get a good nights sleep. Muscles cramp and fire (move) during REM
which is very unusual. Doc no longer ask how I slept (meh, I'm fine) but will ask my wife (who says I turn into
the Tasmanian devil at night). CPAP is helping, as we can see the AHI coming down (from 60 to around 5),
so huge improvement. Oddly enough with more oxygen my body is more active during sleep (sigh).
