Power Failure

Post by Mykale » Fri Mar 13, 2015 10:28 am

15 Months of using CPAP and finally had a power outage during the night! Woke up very groggy trying to suck air in thru the P10 mask. I was so groggy I did not even think to open my mouth and breath. About the time I woke up enough to realize the night lights etc were out and pulled the mask off, you guessed it, the power came back on and the PR machine came back on and started blowing again. Never even considered an un-interruptible power supply before but might explore the possibility. Fun fun fun

It is not practical to use a UPS, to run a XPAP, the useful size is to great, and cost prohibity. Search for methods that do work on the site, some are very worthwhile. Jim

Consider it an early "April Fools" joke. While an UPS would keep it running, I can tell you from experience that the BLASTED alarm (alarms in my case) will keep you awake worse than not having the CPAP.

my cat walked across my machine last night and turned it off. While I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get a breath,
the machine came back on....but it made me realize I need something for backup. Will be looking that up on the forum.

Most UPS's won't last long powering a CPAP machine, but many power outages are fairly short in duration, so they're not entirely useless.

Some UPS's will allow you to turn off the alarm.

Some CPAP machines, mostly older models, may have problems running off of a UPS because of the modified sine wave voltage they create. S8 humidifiers are susceptible, and I suspect the humidifiers on older Respironics machines might be as well.

There are alarms you can get that signal power outages. Some just plug in to the wall. And if you use a UPS battery on a computer or other equipment, you can turn the alarm on for those.

I have my UPS batteries set to signal an outage, and a CPAP battery backup in my drawer ready to go.
