Aclaim 2 vs. Breeze vs. Swift

Post by Sleeping With The Enemy » Fri Feb 18, 2005 11:35 pm

I thought I was in love with the Swift, not sure anymore....

I guess I'm pretty active sleeper. Start out on stomach falling asleep and who knows from there. Sometimes I end up in the living room or outside...Just kidding. No really, I wake up on side or back, etc.

I am interested to hear feedback on the Aclaim 2. I have not tried the Breeze, not sure if it would work since I'm so restless.

I need to figure something out so I can get some good, comfortable sleep.

The Breeze

Post by VancouverBreeze » Sat Feb 19, 2005 3:20 am

Hi!

I'm not an expert on masks...and see my posting about the breeze and my hair....

But for me, the breeze has been very good. I sleep on my side and flip around a lot, and it never hits the pillows and feels very natural. Only once in a while do I get woken up if the hose catches on the top of my pillow...think of a bull getting led around by the nostrils!! It's a little like bit like that

So...though I've only tried a mask and then the breeze...I really like the breeze...with a little ky to keep my nostrils happy! (I was told KY is fine, but vaseline a big no no in terms of the plastic)

I sleep on my side, turning several times during the night from side to side...a somewhat restless sleeper.

The Breeze is far and away my favorite. Comfortably light all over. It stays put absolutely on me. No shifting or sliding on my head at all. But that stability is probably because I put the side straps down far lower than the way they are shown in pictures. See the retouched "Lower" picture below for how far down I put the straps, sticking them together over the front of the hose and not using the sliding clip in front at all:

Incidentally, the way the hose is shown going down the back of the man's head is NOT the way the hose actually lays best. When you're wearing the Breeze, the hose is loose on top of the head from about the center-top, and the loose hose is best routed upward from the top of the head.

I have a hook affixed to the wall behind the head of my bed, for hanging the main air hose up out of the way and preventing the weight of the main hose from pulling on any mask. The Breeze hose goes upward from the top center of my head to that hanger, keeping it out of the way and allowing me to turn freely from side to side with nothing pulling on the headgear or tugging the nostrils.

It's important to get nasal pillows that most DME's would say are "too large" for you. You don't want pillows that you'd have to cram up into your nostrils. The pillows will be more comfortable and more leakproof if you get pillows large enough that they will sit more to the outside of your nostril openings (the nares) and lightly against them - not shoved up inside the snout. For men, that usually means "Large" or "Extra Large" nasal pillows. For women, it usually means "Medium or "Large" nasal pillows. I have a small nose and small nostril openings, but I prefer the "Large" nasal pillows for the Breeze. No leaks at all even with them sitting almost completely outside my nostrils. Out of curiosity to see just how leakproof "too large" pillows would be at high pressures, I set my pressure at a single 19 for a few minutes - the Breeze pillows didn't leak one bit up there, and I even tried turning back and forth from side to side. Amazing.

The Breeze headgear itself comes in only one size - two sections of it slide in and out to fit the head. Sizes like "small, medium, large, etc." refer only to the size of the two little cushiony nasal "pillows" themselves.

I wear the Breeze almost every night. Occasionally I'll switch to the Activa nasal mask for a night - not because the Breeze bothers me, but simply for a change to another nice mask, just for the heck of it. I've never had the Breeze nasal pillows irritate my nostrils at all, but if you did have some tenderness, I've heard that a dab of Ayr gel at the nostrils before putting on any nasal pillows type of mask helps prevent soreness.

On the breeze what kind of material did they use to make the nasal pillows? Also have you tried the dreamseal?

So if you had to chose, obviously you would choose the Breeze over the Swift?

Greetings HH,

I would choose the Breeze over the Swift. The Swift is not far behind it though. I have a big round face and the Swift can be a little tight on me around the cheekbone.

I guess you could call me a die hard Breeze fanatic, but for sleeping in just about any positoin, that mask rules.

The pillows are made of siicon.

Regards,

Ted

My new DMES is going to be sending me an Activa, Breeze and Mirage Vista this week. I love the feel of the silicone. Currently using Swift and it just gouges into my face when I am sleeping turning side to side and it irritates my nostrils.

I'll give Breeze a shot!

I'm a walking indentation ad on my cheeks for hours with the wsift. Ive just ordered a breeze. I'm going to try it too.
What's with the hair loss re: Breeze?

hhunt, I tried the Breeze "Dreamseal" (the little triangular nose mask that is an alternative thing to use with that headgear) but I didn't like the Dreamseal - was leaky on me. The Breeze with nasal pillows though - I love them. The nasal pillows themselves are very thin, soft, pliable silicone.

Do remember to get nasal pillows that you (or the person fitting you for them) would say might be "too big". Bigger ones smush up nicely against the outside of your nostrils and make a better, more leakproof seal against the nose instead of up in it. Pillows that most DME's would probably say "THESE fit you" are actually too small, imho, and have to be crammed up into the nostrils - almost certain to leak before the night is over.

I'm using the large pillows with the Swift now. My husband says every time I move, the seal breaks and the air blasts him!!

I've tried adjusting the straps with no change. I guess the Swift isn't going to be my love mask!

Am anxious to try Breeze and Activa(again). Any other suggestions are welcome.

I love you guys!

Well, I have tried the Breeze and Swift. But now my favorite mask is the Comfortlite. It fits me perfectly, is ultra light, and seals just as well as the Breeze did for me. I love all of the adjustmets that can be made and its seems to be a well made mask. The only advantage that the Breeze has is that is a little better for side sleepers. However, the Comfortlite is okay for that also.
Can't understand why I haven't seen more comments on it.

Wow, I call that the Discomfort Lite. I tried it, and could not get a good seal with my nose. Had to crank the damn thing down onto my head like a vice, and then twist that adjustment thing until it felt like it was going to push my nose bone into my brain before it would stop leaking.

I HATED it.

Which just goes to show, YMMV.

Liam, happy that Anonymous has found a mask they like, honestly!

I also tried the Comfort Lite and couldn't stand the thing. I like the silicone better.

Glad Guest found something that works, hang onto it if it works for you.

FYI: I CHANGED MY NAME FROM HHUNT TO SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY because that is what I feel like I am doing.

SWTE,

I doubt it's broken pillow seal on the Swift thats blowing on your husband. The Swift exhaust ports really blow hard. I bet it is just the normal exhaust that he feels blowing on you. He probably wishes it was a mask malfunction so he can get you to quit using the Swift.

I received my Swift yesterday and used it for the first time last night. Absolutely no problems with this interface; it's light, applies no pressure to nares or upper lip and, at least for me, is not noisy.
I have tried the Breeze and found it would not stay in place and applied uncomfortable pressure both to the nares and the upper lip.

I have been very satisfied with the Nasal Aire II. I suspect I will now alternate between the Swift and the NAII. I did notice that I could feel the headgear strap of the Swift pushing on my cheek; this caused no discomfort last night. Only time will tell if this will develop into a problem. I also got much more "rainout" with the swift than I ever got with the NAII; but my heated hose should be delivered today or tomorrow.

dwells,

The heated hose will take care of the rainout. Glad to hear you liked the swift. From the US sales rports it seems the Swift has been very profitable for ResMed.
