Waking up suddenly after only four to five hours of sleep

Post by Terhab » Fri Feb 13, 2015 3:39 am

Hello everyone. I've been using Respironics CPAP since two months. In the beginning I really enjoyed my sleep but off late I get only four to five hours of sleep and I wake up suddenly wide awake. Earlier I used to get at least seven hours of sleep while using nasal mask. I changed it to nasal pillow mask and it's been happening ever since. Is it because of the mask or something else ? However I am not complaint about the Cpap at all. In the end it is better to get four to five hours of sleep than suffering from 83 apneas per hour. If anyone can kindly comment to solve this issue I would be grateful.

If this problem began when you switched to a nasal pillows mask, that would certainly be my first suspicion. Were you using a nasal mask or full face mask when you slept longer? Hopefully you'll join the forum and list your equipment so we can better help you. If your machine reports data from your treatment, it would be interesting to see what your data says. Maybe your mouth falls open, particularly during REM sleep, and the air going out your mouth wakes you. If that were happening, you should see it in your data as a leak. Good luck pinpointing the problem and moving forward.

Thank you for the quick response. I will sleep tonight with the other nasal mask and also ask my Cpap supplier to get me the data so that I can post it here. I have joined the forum and will be sending details of the Equipments I am using.

After a year, I occasionally wake up suddenly after 4 or 5 hours but usually I can roll over and go back to sleep. It happened often in the beginning and I would take the mask off before going back to sleep... now, the mask stays on and most of the time I don't wake up. One cause of waking up suddenly is an event that the machine didn't catch. It could be, as another poster mentioned, that you need a full-face mask - do you sleep with your mouth open? that would require a FF mask.

Not unusual.
