OT: Slightly- Dental crowding starts with farming

Post by BlackSpinner » Wed Feb 11, 2015 10:40 am

Malocclusion and dental crowding arose 12,000 years ago with earliest farmers
Hunter-gatherers had almost no malocclusion and dental crowding, and the condition first became common among the world's earliest farmers some 12,000 years ago in Southwest Asia, according to findings published in the journal PLOS ONE.

It took us thousands of dollars to overcome this problem, but my daughter got her final phase of orthodontia off yesterday and her mouth is GORGEOUS! Maybe I should send the bill to big agriculture.

Congratulations!

People have kept saying here that it is a modern problem - it is in terms of evolution. However I will be damned if I will go and live the Paleo life style - it is too brutally cold here to live in a tent and follow the elk for my taste.

I really, really wish that Cordain had not termed his diet the "Paleo Diet". I have no fantasies that I'm eating the way that Paleo man did. "Ancestral Health Diet" would have been a much better term. I do think I'm eating closer to what my great grandma (who lived to be 104) ate growing up--nose to tail pastured animals, wild fish, whole foods, natural fats. I am skipping the noodles and bread she ate, though.

We probably should also consider the breast vs bottle debate; especially where it affects oral anatomy.

The first I saw of it, way back in the 80's, it was called the "Stone Age Diet" and was used to support eating an almost vegetarian diet PLUS a lot of walking weight lifting.

I prefer the longevity of modern humans.

The medical profession sent an alert to men last fall:

1. More men than women die of complications from osteoporosis. (That one surprised me.)

2. Swimmers and cyclists are at high risk for osteoporosis. They cautioned swimmers and cyclists to get impact exercise every week - squats, deadlifts, upper body exercises.
