Smoky CPAP stuff: one person's trash is another's treasure?

Post by InsomniacGuy » Tue Feb 10, 2015 9:38 am

Not sure if this is worth my time or yours, but I suppose we'll find out.

These were acquired from a Craigslist seller who stated "smoke-free home". Of course, when I got there his father-in-law was smoking. So, I've aired these out, and there is still a faint* smell of smoke on the headgear, tube, mesh bag, and carrying case -- and a particularly noticeable smoke odor on the silicone on the masks. I would assume his father-in-law lives in the house. (Seller says he used CPAP 3 times before opting for surgery -- found data for one night of CPAP machine use in late 2013.)

Why would you want these?
-you want to experiment with the boiling baking soda method -- or are paranoid about Ozium -- and want to do a trial run with either technique or are pioneering a new cleaning technique and need test masks
-you are building a smoky-CPAP kit for the times you will be in smoky environments
-you need props for your indie film

First image: "L" ResMed Mirage Quattro mask, headgear has stains which are pictured to the left of the forehead adjustment knob; ResMed headgear size Medium

Image

Second image: Respironics tube; faint smoky odor

Third image: "L" Respironics ComfortGel Blue Full face mask; Respironics head gear (no size label)

Fourth image: Respironics mesh bag and mystery part which has been identified

Fifth image: Respironics carrying case for System One; note dust (?) on flap and dirt on strap; similar dust line on bottom of case

Will entertain offers via PM.

(*Faint odor = you sniff clothes that you've been airing out in the sun after being in a smoky bar, and you think they need a little more time in the sun or you consider washing them because that might be faster -- that's the level of the odor) (Smoke odor on silicone parts is more noticeable.)

To me the hose is trash (cheap to replace $4 - $6) and I wouldn't mess with the masks as even a little smoke smell will cause me issues.

As for the bag and perhaps the mesh bag, I had a M-series bag which ended up with some weird odors on it, I used a liberal amount of Febreze on it, like soaking wet and then left out to air for a couple days and it came out okay. But I don't breath though it.

Little part, hard to tell how big it is but perhaps a mouth piece of some sort.

the little part is the anti fixation valve ... goes into the elbow of the mask
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

In that case, I wouldn't try to put it in your mouth.

The small part looks like the anti-asphyxia valve flapper from a ResMed full face mask.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -clip.html

When I get used stuff, I clean everything, and then boil a large pot of water, then turn off the heat, and then drop all the parts other than foam, cloth, or hoses into the pot, swish around a little to get the air bubbles out, and then let it cool. All of those parts get washed in the diswasher before and after heat treat.

Some hoses, including short hoses that are parts of masks, can't take the full heat of boiling water. There are some links to ResMed sanitation procedures in my signature line. If the mask is a "freebie," you might risk it anyway. The short hoses on my Swift FX masks have no problem with the heat. Some people have melted short hoses. I've noticed that regular "long" hoses tend to get crinkly in boiling water, but are OK at 70C.

Headgear gets soaked overnight in 70% rubbing alcohol. (Actually works better than 90% for some germs.) Saturate it, and seal it in a bag. Be careful. Alcohol can catch fire.

Control III disinfectant from our host apparently works well, and one bottle goes a long way. It's probably overkill for most of us. Read the directions. The concentrated solution is nasty, but the diluted stuff is reasonably safe.

Does that keep you from spending too much time worrying about your data?

Sometimes, the malapropism is the greater truth.

A malapropism (also called a Dogberryism) is the use of an incorrect word in place of a word with a similar sound, resulting in a nonsensical, often humorous utterance. An example is Yogi Berra's statement: "Texas has a lot of electrical votes," rather than "electoral votes".

I know, asphyxia only faintly sounds like fixation, but I tried . . .

Surely, that's not an anagram, that's a spoonerism.

I consider Febreze to be an odor masking agent, not an odor eliminator.

There are numerous cigarette smoke odor "eliminators" to be found. Here's one: "Vamoose" http://www.vamooseproducts.com/. They offer a fragrance free version. Which seems like quite a statement of confidence.

I should buy some of that and spray my brother in law with it
Thank you.

Maybe there's a market selling used equipment like that to smokers? They won't notice it.
