Alergic Response within 2 days of using CPAP

Post by Wire Bender » Mon Feb 09, 2015 2:02 pm

I have a new Resmed S9 Wireless Autoset CPAP machine with a pressure range of 13 - 16. I have had difficulty adjusting to this higher pressure which my wife has not experienced with hers set to a lower range. I have a full face mask and a nasal mask. Both work OK at the higher pressure, but after 2 days of nightly use, I begin to have sneezing episodes with a running nose. It is a major problem for me in my work of meeting with people and speaking. Has anyone had a similar problem. My prescribing physician has not encountered this problem, but suggested using a detergent for cleaning that has minimal additives. I need to be on Nyquil to try to counter the undesirable symptoms. Thanks for your assistance!

It is probably to do with your humidity settings. Some people need lots, some need less.

Turn your humidity down.

Google "cpap rhinitis"...sneezing could be from either too much or too little humidity. Sneezing is a common response as well as congestion, drainage, pressure, etc...all which mimic an allergic response. It's what nasal mucosa do when they are irritated.
If you are using an already lower setting on the humidifier try turning it up.
If you are using an already higher setting on the humidifier try turning it down.
If using a middle of the road setting then toss a coin.
There is no right or wrong setting as each person's nasal mucosa may differ widely in what makes them happy.
If your read up on "cpap rhinits" most of the time more humidity is suggested but it wouldn't be impossible for your nose to prefer less.

Did you THOROUGHLY clean your masks before using them?
And, if you did, what did you use?
