Memory Foam Bed

Post by araris » Sat Feb 07, 2015 8:25 am

I just started another topic, but I didn't want this question to get lost.

Does anyone have a memory foam bed and if so has it helped you sleep throughout the night?

I wake up with aches and pains in the night and I so desperately want to sleep like I did when I was a kid.

Our memory foam bed was a huge waste of money. It was a $3000 Tempurpedic set marked down to $1200 and we thought we were getting a deal. We both wish we hadn't bought it.

1. It is hot as Hades to start with. My bedfellow now sleeps on a comforter folded up so he's not directly on the sheet/mattress.

2. It is too squishy for me. I wake up in pain from my spine curved from sinking into the bed when I'm on my side.

3. My pillow also squishes down into the bed and causes my mask to break seal so I now sleep on the very edge of the bed where there is slightly more support.

Thanks Katydid,

I guess maybe I'll have to figure something else out.

I would love to hear more opinions

Me too.

The aches and pains are a war I won't ever win (some bad arthritis going on) I won't ever win but I do what I can to at least hold my own in the battles.
I can't offer any input as to how much a memory foam bed would help because I don't have one. My hubby refused one due to heat.
We opted for a Sleep Number bed instead and while it wasn't a 100% miracle it did help considerably and actually the adjustability is probably better suited for my own personal needs as sometimes I need more support and sometimes less.

Have you figured out the cause of the aches and pains (like arthritis)???

I have a Temperpedic (sp?).....they do sleep "hot" and are expensive.

Maybe look into a Sleep Number bed so you can adjust the firmness to your individual liking. I think if I had it to do again I'd probably go the Sleep Number route.

Could be arthritis... I'm 40, but used to lift really heavy. It's back pain and hip pain mostly. but i don't have it during the day. Only from laying in bed for awhile.

+1 been sleeping on one for years, sometimes I firm it up and sometimes down depending on how my body feels.

Don't totally rule arthritis out at your young age.
When I was 35 years old and had a cervical spine xray the radiologist called me up (I was working were the xray was done) to make sure that the cervical spine he was looking at was mine...and I had to say yep..that's mine and he said the arthritis made it look like the cervical spine of a 65 year old. By the time I was 50 years old...I was way past needing surgery and the 35 year old xrays actually looked good compared to the 50 yr old...I am now 62 and had the surgery in 2001 and while things aren't perfect...at least the neck is stable.

Hip pain...a bit over weight...my husband has this issue and it's bursitis and laying in bed really makes it worse. It is made worse when he gains a bit of weight and made better if he gets the excess weight off.
Talk to your doctor about your aches and pains...get some help because there is help out there.
Get the hips and lower back checked out now...please...don't let yourself get to the point where I was (I pretty much ignored my neck until age 50) and maybe avoid having worse problems later as you get older like me. I needed the surgery long before I had it done and suffered greatly..needlessly...plus it was dangerous.

We love our Temperpedic. We don't notice it "sleeping hot", but that may be because our previous bed was a waterbed. It is very comfortable and the ability to raise the head of the bed reduces apnea and GERD. We don't raise it very much, but even a little bit helps.

I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and tried the Temperpedic bed. It was TERRIBLE! I woke up in the morning so stiff and sore that it took me half to day to get moving.

Got myself an expensive Sterns and Foster bed (don't know if that just a Canadian brand or not) and have slept very well for about 6 years on that.

It all depends on the person.

Sterns & Foster is good. The best bed I have ever slept on is a Kingsdown. Next bed will be a Sleep Number for sure. But Crikey, they are expensive.

I bought the $600 Queen Gel Foam from Sam's, online only, and love it. I've had it for about a year. They give you a 90 day satisfaction guarantee so I figured at its price, I had nothing to lose by trying it. Costco has another one that looks interesting with the same guarantee. My wife and I are considering it for a guest (in the doghouse) bed.

You can now get memory foam with gel in it, which keeps it cool, but it's important to get a 'firm' (at least 5 lb. density) because otherwise they can be too soft.

"MARGE! MARGE! where are you?"
(muffled) "I'm in the bed, I think this new mattress is too soft"

I got a memory foam queen bed in 2012 after not sleeping well when pressure on my hips caused pain. It has relieved that pain. It is not a "hot" bed to sleep in, but does hold more heat than an innerspring mattress. Comfort is a very individual thing, so really the only way to know if it works for you is to go test drive some at the stores. The one we got has high density memory foam rated at 10-16 ILD, 7.6-8.4 lb/ft3 Density. This one takes some time to acquire a shape, but once you've settled in it distributes weight pretty well with no pressure points.
