Newbie question- How do I use this thing all night?
Last night was my first night with my new ResMed Airsense 10. I had to take it off after only about 2 hours. I'm having a hard time getting used to using it.
Any suggestions??
THanks!!

welcome to Cpaptalk .
Two hours for the first night is not bad ... that is all I got the first night .
Stick with it ... it will get better. Can you explain why you took it off ?
You should sigh up and input your equipment ... that will get you better suggestions of how to improve therapy.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Thanks for the quick responses guys (or gals)
I took it off because I couldn't sleep with the mask on. I have a nasal mask to start with. To me it's very strange and hard to breathe with the pressure. I have the pressure low setting at 4 and set to auto ramp. I did manage to fall asleep but woke up many times, finally, I just said enough, and took it off. I also should say I have a cold, so maybe not the best time to start using this thing, although I did take Nyquil, still couldnt sleep
How do I upload the data? I'm brand new to this stuff.
THanks again!

Re: Newbie question- How do I use this thing all night?
Your minimum pressure setting of 4 and a default ramp of 45 minutes is probably causing you stress as that pressure is too low to breath. I know you're new to this, but we see this problem repeated over and over, and the answer is to either turn ramp off, which you can do in your setup menu, or you need to raise the initial low pressure of ramp and reduce the time of ramp, which requires you to access the clinical settings. The cold is not helping, but your pressure is too low to start out. Your reaction to remove the mask is normal under the circumstances that if feels claustrophobic and suffocating.SRM1 wrote:Thanks for the quick responses guys (or gals)

We can fix that. Which model Airsense 10 do you have?

Please add your equipment to your profile
wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile
It really helps us help you if we know exactly what equipment you are using.
For further help...it would really be nice if we knew what problem you were having in more detail.
We can offer ideas to fix things until we have a better understanding of what might need fixing.
Like "why did you feel the need to remove the mask after 2 hours"....any particular reason...comfort, leak, suffocation?
Also would help if we knew what pressures you were using.
Often the "suffocation" thing means simply the pressures are too low and not enough air movement...but without knowing more details as to what happened ....we can't really offer any specific ideas to help make the process of adjustment to this therapy any easier.
In other words...to help fix a problem we need to know what the problem is.

For the next few evenings (or days) find a nice exciting tv show/movie/video game. Put the whole system on and watch/play for an hour or 2. This is to get your subconscious used to the fact that this thing is safe to have on your face. It gets your attention away from the equipment and gives your body a chance to deal with it.

Entered my equipment list.
I took the nasal mask off, because I felt I couldn't breathe I'm gonna try to turn off the auto ramp as suggested.

Not showing up...did you click on "submit"?Tripacer wrote:Entered my equipment list.
If you did you may not have chosen the correct equipment.
Tell us what you are using and we will tell you which choice to make...some of the older discontinued equipment choices have broken links and people choose them by mistake.
Sometimes it's difficult to figure out exactly what you are using...especially the Phillips Respironics brand.

Re: Newbie question- How do I use this thing all night?
Suffocation...common complaint when pressures are low. We won't suffocate but it can sure feel like it.
Turning the ramp off might help if the starting pressure is higher than the ramp but sometimes the starting pressure is low even without the ramp so turning off the ramp doesn't help.

Anyway, you can download sleepyhead to manage your sleep data here http://sleepfiles.com/SH/index.html?TestingVersions
And here is a tutorial on posting your data online https://sleep.tnet.com/docs/imgur
Turning off ramp will probably help you last longer on the machine, so hopefully you'll have a more successful night. Machine suppliers often provide auto machines setup to default values. We will need to raise your minimum pressure to at least 6.0. Pressing the home button and control wheel at the same time allows you to review and change the pressure settings. Take a look, and let us know what the current settings are.

For a first night, you've done well... it took me a few weeks to get past 4 hours straight. Your brain doesn't like the alien on your face, so you need to "teach" it that it's OK to sleep with the mask on. Try using the machine and mask while watching TV or reading during the day for a while. You can also tweak the fit of the headgear then. My problem with the mask was leaking that sounded like a whoopee cushion; I solved that with mask liners: ask your DME or go to http://www.padacheek.com or https://www.cpap.com for liners if you want to try them. Some people tape the mask to their cheeks.. one strip of gentle first aid tape or a bandaid so that when they try to take it off during the night, having to remove the tape will remind them to leave it on. Also make sure you clean your face really well; facial oils and moisturizers can prevent a good seal.SRM1 wrote:Last night was my first night with my new ResMed Airsense 10. Sometimes it just takes time to acclimate to the thing, and sometimes, even after months of therapy, you'll find that you've taken the mask off. After a month of cpap use, I got through the night without taking the mask off. That was a year ago. I woke up at 7:30 this morning without my mask; I did go to sleep with it on. On checking my stats, I discovered that I'd taken it off at 5:30; I have no recollection of it, however. I also noted in my stats that I had a flow limitation shortly before 5:30 which could have made me wake up.
You don't say what mask you are using, your AirSense10 is the machine. The mask is an important part of the equipment, you need one that's comfortable and fits well if you are going to sleep with it through the night. Some people have to try many masks or a different type of mask (full face, nasal, pillows) before finding one that works. My original mask, the Quattro Air, was a good fit and comfortable, so I just had to get used to it. These days, I have an upgraded version of Air, the F10, which has more comfortable headgear.

2 hours the first night.
Try and aim for 3 hours or more the next night.
And so on.
