Bum Data card

Post by AfibApnea » Mon Jan 12, 2015 1:04 pm

Fortunately, I have multiple machines (and therefore multiple data cards) to double check my data card problems…

What I originally thought was a data card reader problem turns out to be a data card problem.

Simply speaking, my data card does not “mount” (show up as a disk drive) on the computer when I have the card reader read it. Since the data cards for my other (BiPAP) machine does (mount) it means there is a problem with the card (not the reader, and not Sleepyhead).

Fortunately this (CPAP) data card only contains information for my backup machine and I’m only missing two days of information.

What are my options?
  • - Is there any way to recover the information on the card? (Like by putting it back into its machine and doing another night…)
    - Do I need to reformat the card, and if so, how do I best do it?
    • - Obviously, I cannot instruct Encore or Sleepyhead to reformat the card.
      - Therefore, is it best done by instructing the CPAP machine to reformat the card? If the machine can reformat the card, can the reformatting be done ONLY on the machine from which it came, or can any machine perform a reformat?
      - Should I do it on the computer? (I don’t know if I can do it on the computer.)
    - Do I need to get another card?
  • - If I can reformat the card with another machine can I insert the reformattedcard into the original CPAP machine from whence it came?
    - Aside from trying to read it with a computer (my CPAP machine is at a remote location) can I know the card is working just by observing something on the CPAP machine or do I need to wait until I get home and try to mount it on my computer?
Sorry for all the questions
Thanks

If the card is bad, you can't recover the data off of it. You buy a new card, insert it into the Cpap and it will format it and place non-detail data on the card automatically.

You could attempt to format the bad card as well (using your computer), but if you can't get it to mount that most likely won't go anywhere unless it is asking for you to format it. If it does format, you do the same as above, insert it into your Cpap and it will put the non-detail data on it automatically.

If you have been using SleepyHead and/or Encore up to this point, you already have the detail saved in it up until the time you were unable to read the card. For Encore this would be if you are selecting it to import the detail data.

There is no real point in putting the detail info back onto the card if you have a new one since SleepyHead would already have it.

SD cards are cheap. Respironics machines will use pretty much any SD or SDHC card 2 GB or bigger. SD cards are somewhat unreliable. It's not worth fooling with them. Just replace it.

If you can manage to copy the data off the card into your computer, just keep a copy there. SleepyHead is happy reading the data from your computer instead of the SD card. It's a good idea to copy the entire SD card to your computer every so often and rename that directory with today's date.

The machine will remember the compliance data even without an SD card, but you'll lose therapy data.

A couple of things to try. Switch the write lockout switch on and off to make sure it is fully disengaged in either lock or open. Also, is the card recognized at all or as you say it will not mount ... period. If Windows (and I assume you are using windows) can see the device but not the directory, you may want to right click on the drive, go into properties -> tools -> check now and perform a scan on the device. There could be broken links in the directory structure. You may want to try to read the card in a different PC altogether. Lastly, you could try to re-insert it into your CPAP and see if it can read the files. Turning the machine on for a minute and off will force it to write to the card and then try it again in the PC. If all that fails, well...it is toast and time to replace it.

fun fact, the 'switch' on a sd card is just a sliding piece of plastic, it has no electrical contact inside the card, just like the write protect slider in an old 3.5" floppy, or the notch in the side of a 5.25" floppy.

there's a switch in the side of the reader slot that detects which position that slider is in.

never actually USED paper tape

funny story related to me by a ex submarine reactor operator co-worker.

they still had paper tape punches on the sub, which would produce buckets of the little punched out holes... chaff.

so the deal was, that someone new would be going down the corridor, person a would hit 'em with a bucket of water, and then immediately, person b would hit them with a bucket of chaff.

allegedly, the stuff would stick like glue and be a real pain to get all those little paper dots off everything, (skin, uniform, etc)

always made me feel so secure knowing what was protecting our country *lol*
