OT: I want some Whine with my cheese

Post by mgaggie » Wed Jan 07, 2015 12:39 am

I really need to rant.

The heat has really gotten to me this year. For the last 4 days its been between 95-104. Despite the building I work in being air-conditioned, I nearly fainted at the registers yesterday. I had sweat literally pouring off me. I think I drank 3 times the amount of water I usually do. The only way I managed to cool down enough to do basic functions was to constantly wipe my face and neck with a wet cloth.

There was a pedestal fan up at the registers, but the boss in their infinite wisdom decided it was a tripping hazard, so removed it. Trying to get any fan up there is like bashing my head on a brick wall, can't do this, shouldn't do that . So I've gone and bought a small desk fan and will have it up there with me, and take it away after my shift (one issue the boss had was a fan being left up at registers when it wasn't needed).

I'm really not looking forward to my shift tomorrow, especially if I have the same duty manager as yesterday. When I told him I've had about 5 complaints from customers saying it was too hot his reply was "No point in fucking complaining to me, I can't do anything about it"

Rant over

Sure hope the weather cools off for you soon. It's so miserable working in either a too hot or too cold environment. I'd probably whine too.

One of the first places air conditioning was used was in movie theaters.
I remember the signs out front, "It's COOL inside." (Yeah, I'm THAT old!)
Sure wish I could ship you some of our cold.
Right now the "cold science" stunts work here.
Blowing frozen soap bubbles and throwing boiling water up to make an instant cloud is so cool (pun intended)
I hate the extreme heat of summer as well.

Just try to think of us here. It has been -30c with a wind chill factor making it feel -40c.

With me being a redneck, I'd love to have your problem. I guess I'm acclimated to where I'm going after this life.

I live in the state of Georgia. During the summer, we get temps like that along with high humidity. When my son was playing baseball in that kind of heat, we would add ammonia to cool water, then dip towels into it (wring them out) and place them on the backs of the kids necks. It's a great way to deal with the heat if you have to do something active. Just a couple drops per cup of water is all that it takes.

fun fact, -40f=-40c for those who might be celsius challenged.

I've only been in actual -40 temps once. it's FRIGGIN COLD! I could feel the moisture from my breath freezing in my nostrils. and I was wearing a t-shirt at the time.

in july. in gulfport mississippi.

bonus points to anybody who can guess how that happened.

You were in a walk-in freezer, that was storing dry ice (so it needs to be extra cold).

partially right. except dry ice sublimes at −78.5 °C (−109.3 °F) at Earth atmospheric pressures. so that wasn't it.

you get half credit though

Fun observation:
Driving back to Alaska one January, stopped in NorthWay for gas.
Early morning, really felt cold.
I noticed the guys kids looking out the window.
I asked what are they were looking at......
he said they were watching the thermometer....
it was -49F.....if it dropped to -50F, the school busses don't run.
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."
I said that.

Thanks everyone, sympathies to my freezing northern dwellers.

Today was marginally better, only because I had purchased a little desktop fan and took that in with me. If they didn't let me use it, I would of gone home when the heat got unbearable. The boss didn't seem to mind, and I was careful it didn't break any rules or interfere with sales.

bv, I've wet clothes with cold water and draped them around my neck which helps. But unfortunately it wouldn't be acceptable for me to have a cloth draped over my neck all the time (stupid company image).

I think the coldest its ever been here has been -5c with a windchill of -10c, some of you would probably consider that luxury!

You Know It's Hot In Australia When!

1) The best parking spot is determined by shade not distance

2) Hot water comes out of both taps

3) You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron

4) The temperature drops below 32c and you feel chilly

5) You discover that in January and February it only takes two fingers to steer a car

6) You discover you can get sunburnt through your windscreen

7) You develop a fear of metal door handles

You break a sweat the instance you step outside at 7am

9) Your biggest bicycle accident fear is "What if i get knocked out and end up lying on the road and getting cooked"

10) You realise asphalt has a liquid state

11) Farmers are feeding there chickens crushed ice to prevent them from laying hard boiled eggs

12) The trees are whistling for dogs

13) While walking back barefoot to your car from any event, you do a tightrope act on the white lines in the carpark

14) You catch a cold from having the aircon on full blast all night long

15) You learn that Westfield Shopping Centre's aren't just Shopping Centre's, they are temples to worship Air-Conditioning

16) Sticking your head in the freezer and taking deep breaths is considered normal

17) A cup full of ice is considered a great snack

18) A black out is life threatening because your aircon and your fans no longer work.

19) No one cares if you walk around with no shoes on

20) You keep anything in the fridge, including potatoes, bread and clothing

21) People have enough left over beer cans to make a boat and compete in a regatta. (S.A joke)

22) The effort of towelling yourself off after a shower means you need another shower right away.

23) You will wait patiently until the day it starts raining to go on a run.

24) You worry your ceiling fan is spinning so fast it will fly off and Kill You

25) You Laugh because this list is so accurate

2 suggestions - a "personal" fan, that hangs around your neck and blows on your face, and a "cooling towel" or "ice scarf".

I've seen a similar, but not quite long list posted for Texas...

You Know You Are in Texas When ....
* You can say 110 degrees without fainting.
* You eat hot chili to cool your mouth off.
* You discover that in July, it takes only 2 fingers to drive your car.
* You can make sun tea instantly.
* You no longer associate bridges (or rivers) with water.
* You learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron.
* You notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
* Hotter water comes from the cold water tap than the hot one.
* It's noon in July, kids are on summer vacation, and not one person is moving on the streets.
* You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
* Sunscreen is sold year round, kept at the front of the checkout counter.
* A formula less than 30 SPF is a joke and you only wear that to go to the corner store.
* Hot air balloons can't go up.
* No one would dream of putting vinyl upholstery in a car.
* Your biggest bicycle wreck fear:"What if I get knocked out and lie on the pavement and cook to death?"
* You realize that asphalt has a liquid state

The average daily high in Victoria is 79 F, for January, the hottest month.

In the US southwest where I live the average daily high is well over 100 F for about 2 1/2 months straight, and can reach into the 120's. We often have 100 days in a row over 100.

So come visit me in August, and then home will feel a little better.
