Which full face mask to get?

Post by cpapjack » Tue Jul 25, 2006 7:25 pm

I've been using the Activa for the better part of months now. I am very pleased with and don't really have any complaints. My insurance allows me a nasal mask every months and a full face every 6. I obviously have a nasal mask currently, but I do not have a full face. I'm going to check with my DME to see about getting a full face mask because I feel my allergies starting. I did try the FP431 during my first month, and it lasted only 3 nights because of what it did to my nose. What does everyone recommend I get? I know alot of people will probably say the Hybrid, but I'm not completely convinced yet after reading such mixed reviews about it, although I have been thinking about it.

I suggest you go to cpap.com and read the reviews about different full face masks. When I checked today, the Hybrid had the highest rating of 4.3/5 (18 reviewers). Considering that over 40% of all full face masks sold by cpap.com in the past month have been Hybrids, it will have its share of people who didn't like it. Also, human tendency is that you voice your opinion when you don't like something. Positive experiences are kind of expected of a product like the Hybrid, so not all people who had a positive experience are likely to post their reviews.

Face Mask

Sounds as though you overtightened the mask if the nose was hurting. The trick is to make small adjustments while laying down in different positions and at the set pressure. Many people make the mistake of pulling the straps too tight.

The FP431 which fits under the chin is a good mask, doesn't whistle or leak like the other older masks out there.

The newest on the market is the MOjo by sleepnet. They have a thumbwheel adjuster on the top for sealing up any leaks and the Gel cushion is pretty soft. I played with it at a trade show in SALT Lake City but I have not setup any of my patients with it yet.

The UltraMirage Full Face has been my overall favorite mask so far.

I think the next one I try will be the Mojo from SleepNet, local supplier here carries them so I may check one out in the next day or so.

i use the respironics comfortfull 2 when i don't use the activa, and according to what encore pro printed out at the rt's office, i also got a consistent leak rate of zero utilizing my leak fixer strap during the last week it had recorded the detailed data, so it gets my vote,

and on a side note bro, check your email.

cpapjack,
I have used each of the 'big three' in 2006. I must conclude the Hybrid is far better, for me than the other two. However, with that said I must warn you the Hybrid is a big gamble with big rewards. Why is it a big gamble?
Its because it is very unforgiving of any face that doesn't fit one of the three mouthpieces. What are the big rewards? High air delivery to the lungs, very high CO2 washout, and no sores on the bridge of your nose.

1) UMFF - If I tightened it up enough to stop the leaks, it felt like it was going to move my lower jaw rearward about two inches. Sore nose and sore jaw.

2) HC431 - Too hot, sore nose, and leaky.

If your avatar is a good likeness, none of the 'big three' will work for you..

Oldgearhead,
I don't know if you knew this. If the lower jaw is pushed back as you are saying, there is higher occurrence of apneas and hypopneas and the AHI index goes up.

Yes I read that someplace. My problems with the UMFF is probably related to the fact I have no molars, of my own. However, neither the HC431 (with its chin flap), or the Hybrid (without its chin flap) cause me any jaw discomfort
