Swift user with bleeding at the edge of my nose HELP!!!

Post by C in NJ » Tue Jul 25, 2006 10:54 am

Hello!

I am having trouble with my Mirage Swift™ Nasal Pillow.
During a one night sleep study I found the Swift to be very comfortable. Now that I have used the Swift for five days, I have developed a sore at the edge of my left nostral and both nostral's are tender.
During the last two nights, I have woke up to find that I had taken the mask off in my sleep. I also wake up to find the mask and my nose have a little dry blood on them.

Can anyone offer any advise?

Thank you!!!

C

Not to be to obvious but it would be wise for you to stop using the Swift long enough for that sore to heal. If you do not have another interface then you might try an antiseptic cream and/or a cortisoid cream to help stop the abrasion and heal the sore.

I did get a small sore when I started on the Swift but by using a cortisoid cream (Drugstore generic) for several days it healed quickly and I was never bothered again.

I had similar trouble when I first started using my Swift, some one here sujested a small amount of lubrication, I used KY, and found my noes healed quickly, after a few weeks I no longer need to lubricate the pillows. Good luck.

You may have your straps too tight also. You have to leave the Swift straps just slightly looser than at first it might seem you need to. In addition, try the other sizes of pillow sets. I got fitted with a small by my less than competent DME RT. It became obvious after a few weeks I needed to go to medium. Then, just to experiment I tried the large. Each move up has resulted in more comfort for me. Your experience may vary, but why not try it?

I absolutely second what MJ said. Looser than you would think works is what really worked better for me and larger pillow has been better than smaller. It seems that when the pillows are just a little loose they have more flex and manage slight movements better without breaking the seal.

I used the Swift nasal pillows and the ComfortLite 2 nasal pillows for about four months and had constant sores at the tips of my nares for the entire time. It wasn't really all that painful, but it was annoying. I realized after a while that nasal pillows are not recommended for folks like me with slotted nares, and so I finally opted for something else. That something else turned out to be the Comfort Curve mask, and I'm glad to report that after a couple of weeks or so with the Comfort Curve, the sores at the tip of my nares are nearly healed. Now I just have to worry about slightly sore cheekbones.

I've been thinking about rotating the CL2 and the ComfortCurve every few nights, but suspect that the effect will probably just be that then I've have both sore cheekbones and tender nares.

Regards,
Bill (still looking for the perfect mask . . ., but grateful for the therapy )

I have troubles with a sore nose. I use a Breeze mask that you can have different size pillows for each side of your nose. This helps. You could also try one size smaller pillow size.

Thank you all for your replies!!!!

I have tried the small and the medium pillow because my DME RT suggested the small, but the sleep center suggested the medium. ??
I didn’t quite no what to think, so when the small bothered me, I switched it to the medium. It appears that both are giving me trouble, so I am going to try all of your recommendations.

Again, thank you so much for your help!!

If you have sores, lay off the mask until they are gone. After the sores are healed, use a little moleskin or molefoam a few nights where it was tender and as long as you dont wear it too tight, you should be OK.
Do you have another mask you can use for a few nights?

no other mask

Unfortunately, I do not have another mask available.

I did try some vaseline last night with the medium pillow. I was surprised and delighted to find that I didn't take the mask off in my sleep and my nose is less sore in the morning.

I tried playing around with the large pillow and the mask being loss yesterday afternoon, but it seemed everytime that I moved, air was leaking too easily.

I am very greatful for this message board and all of your suggestions!! You helped my have a better night sleep.
Thank you!
