mask chatters

Post by dennis l » Thu Dec 11, 2014 11:19 am

About 4-5 hours after turning on my CPAP machine, I'm awaken by a "Chattering" noise.
I've determined that it is coming from my P-10 mask.
I have been on this machine for 8 nights and this just started to happen.
I take the mask off of the harness and re-attach it, and it's good for 4-5 hours, then starts to chatter again.
Anyone know what's going on?

Chatters? It's talking in your sleep. Get it some companionship during the day and maybe it won't be so chatty in the middle of the night.

The P10 has a double wall pillow design. The inner pillow can sometimes invert causing problems. Also, Resmed recommends pinching each pillow to correct for some problems. As far has hearing any chatter, I've been married for over 40 years. . . I've developed selective hearing to an art form. Good Luck.

Thanks SGearhart. At least you took my question seriously! I'll see if pinching the pillows works!

Update:
I changed the pillow and the chatter still continues.
I checked the hoses and no obstructions or condensation puddles in the tubing.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Is the chattering sound that you describe occur all the time or only when you either inhale or exhale? When was the last time you cleaned your P10?

It only occurs when I inhale.
I have only been using it for about 2 weeks, but I haven't washed the P-10 at all.
I tried using a different size (Small) p-10 pillow, which I have never used before.
Still same problem.

I've got a p10 and I can't imagine what you mean by 'chattering' ...

my only suggestion is to try a larger pillow... it should have come with three sizes.

I am also using the P10 and I also am having a hard time understanding what "chattering" might be upon inhale.
Is it felt or heard? Do you have a bed partner who hears it also?
I understand face farts, whistling and vibrations but I can't get a handle on chattering.
8 days into therapy...the gear shouldn't need washing and the pillows wouldn't be getting tired that soon.

Only things I can remotely think of might be....
the inner cone wanting to collapse upon inhale and it vibrating ...maybe...I had this happen when I used the XSmall pillow...going up a size fixed it..but when it happened to me I also had a little trouble moving the air.
Or maybe a tiny blockage in the vent holes from maybe a little bit of condensation that forms...and when you take the pillow off the frame and reseat it then the maybe tiny bit of moisture gets shaken off.

I tried using a different size (Small and large) p-10 pillow, small of which I have never used before.
I call it chattering for lack of a better term.
It sounds like someone is squeezing an empty plastic water bottle.
My wife can hear it also. (it's that loud)
It comes from the mask end, but it could just be the audibility that makes it
sound like the mask.

Is your hose over something like the head of the bed? Sometimes my hose will move across the head of my bed and produce a crackling plastic noise.

The water bottle sound makes me think of water in the hose. Have you changed your humidification process?

Good guess. But who knows? This user seems to have limited ability to troubleshoot a noise.

Dennis,
Would you please fill out your profile so we could see what equipment and pressure settings your are using. This may not be of any help but would it give all members more information to try and come up with something. Thanks,

Hi Dennis,
I'm a "re-newbie" gearing up for a re-try.
Anyway, on reading this, could the sound be something like a plastic-y crinkling noise? Is the mask part silicone and very thin? I would guess it may be close to what SGearhart and Pugsy point out, that is a double wall collapsing on itself. If you have changed sizes but have not washed the cushion, could it possibly be reacting to face oil or beard stubble when you're inhaling or exhaling? I'm thinking that an exterior sound like that could be heard by a bed partner.
In any case, perhaps you should try another type of mask and see if you hear the same thing. I'm very sensitive to sound and one of the reasons I stopped therapy was because of an irritating whine that followed my inhale/exhale pattern. I read one of the reviews of the REMstar Pro 60 on the cpap.com site which mentioned this sound as coming from that brand.
I hope you can find the culprit. Giving up ,like I did, is not the answer!
