sneezing while useing cpap
sneezing while useing cpap
Does cpap cause sneezing? Got up last night sneezing about 30 times in a row and nose continually running. Took antihistimine, and no help?

Re: sneezing while useing cpap
It could, but it is not common. What is your humidifier setting?
BTW, the filtered air from CPAP has greatly improved my allergies and greatly reduced the number and severity of colds I get. In my case, CPAP = less sneezing.

I don't sneeze often while on the hose, but when I do it is often spectacularly messy! I run with high humidity to relieve sinus congestion. Sometimes, I just grab a spare FX setup and replace the gooey one (sorry if anyone is eating )

And sometimes you need to turn the humid. down or even off - if it's not needed because ambient hum. is already high, it may cause not only sneezing but congestion.
Re: sneezing while useing cpap
Most likely related to humidity.
Are you using a humidifier?....if not, get one.
If you are already using a humidifier at what setting?
The nasal mucosa react to being unhappy with the humidity being delivered by acting up in a similar way as we would to an allergy attack...swelling...runny nose...sneezing.
The unhappiness can be from either too much or too little humidity.
There is no right or wrong setting because humidity preferences and needs are highly individualized. What makes one persons nasal mucosa very unhappy could be what makes the next person's nasal mucosa happy.
What I usually tell people is this...
If you are using an already higher setting (4 or 5) on the humidifier.....turn it down.
If you are using an already lower setting (1 or 2) on the humidifier....turn it up.
If you are already using a medium setting (like 3) ....toss a coin. If playing the odds...turn it up...google "cpap rhinitis" and you will see what I mean.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Induces Early Nasal Inflammation
Isaac Almendros, MSc,1 Irene Acerbi, MSc,1 Isabel Vilaseca, MD,2,5 Josep M. Montserrat, MD,3,5 Daniel Navajas, PhD,1,4,5 and Ramon Farré, PhD1,5
Patients or Participants:
32 male Sprague-Dawley rats (250–300 g).
Interventions:
The rats were anesthetized and subjected to nCPAP=10 cm H2O and sham-CPAP through a mask for 3 h and 5 h (n=8 each).
Conclusions:
The compression applied by nCPAP (10 cm H2O, 5 h) on the nasal wall of healthy rats is a mechanical stimulus that triggers an early inflammatory process mediated by MIP-2, resulting in neutrophil extravasation

1. How did they know which of the 32 male Sprague-Dawley rats preferred FFMs, nasal pillows, nasal masks, chinstraps, lansinoh and/or Pad-a-Cheeks?
2. How many of the male Sprague-Dawley rats complained about doctors, DMEs and insurance companies?
3. How many dropped out of the study because of lack of access to cpaptalk.com, machines were bricks, no heated hose, not allowed to use mouth tape?
4. WTH were no female Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to CPAP?

I would love to see a picture of the rat sleeping away on CPAP.

I can think of a one or two here who would only have to change their avatar (ba-dump-bump!)
Sneezing on CPAP is definitely a new experience. Thought I might accidentally blow my brains out (would be a pretty small explosion) .

One thing I've learned: If you feel a sneeze coming on early enough, at least unstrap your mask enough so you don't sneeze into the mask. It can be a cleaning nightmare.

Exactly what happens to me! I used to do this before cpap, then it went away for months. Now with the winter weather with less pollen and humidity, I'm sneezing again. Go figure.chunkyfrog wrote:My sneezes normally only occur after i get up and breathe unfiltered room air.
