Just getting started with my hybrid

Post by quilterB » Wed Jul 19, 2006 8:01 am

I received my hybrid mask yesterday and have just spent about an hour working with it. I have only used a FF mask so have no experience with the nasal pillows. My question is about the leaks. My machine lets me know when to adjust the mask (no other info is available to me). It has a 5 * rating. The reading keeps jumping between ** (adjust mask) and *** (good), but will not keep steady. Will not go above *** although I get ***** with the FF. I do not feel any leaks either around my mouth or nose. When using the FF I could always detect the leaks without even looking at the reading on the machine. Any comments or suggestions?

I did substitute the headgear from my 431 mask and it seems much more stable although I do agree with most people that the clips are questionable.

I have been at this for about 2 1/2 months now and have had success in that I can keep my mask on for the 7 or 8 hours that I sleep. But I have yet to have a restfull night. I toss and turn constantly and always seem to be aware of the mask. The FF is so hot on my face even with the humidifier off (some of you more mature women may be able to "feel my pain" ). So I am really intent on making the hybrid work. I have not noticed any improvement in my energy level, in fact my husband and friends have commented on how tired I look now. NOT giving up, just really want the new mask to work.

My other whole issue is that my machine does not give any data except for days used etc. Have an appointment with my doctor in a couple of weeks and want him to write a new script to upgrade my machine. Will ask for advice on that as I get closer.

Thanks again for advice, this is a great bunch of people.

Quilter,
I've been using the Hybrid for a couple of weeks now. It is a great new product, if it fits your face.

The problem you are having with the leak check is happening because the Hybrid has more built in (passive exhalation port flow) leak than any other mask tested with your machine. Just obtain the best setting and forget about it.

The HC431 headgear did not work for me. Too much pressure on the nasal pillows, and not enough pressure on the mouthpiece.

The Hybrid is much, much, cooler if the chin flap is removed, and for me, it seals better without the chin flap.

As for a new machine, In my opinion you just can't beat the RemStar Auto's.
The RemStar Auto's don't really care what mask you are using. They just adjust accordingly.

Nasal pillows - The tricks is to use the largest set that will fit inside you nostrils. The pillow should seal inside the nostrils, not outside. So try to keep contact with the bottom part of you nose at a minimum.

Just getting started with my hybrid

Thanks for the advice. I plan to try it tonight. Hoping for the best.

Are there really people out there who sleep for 6 to 8 hours without waking with mask problems? If so, that is what keeps me trying.

Thanks,
Linda

Here's to giving you hope!
My Hybrid provides me with uninterupted sleep for 8+ hours each night!
I believe that my old tape & chinstrap method (used with Swift) was becoming a big problem by fragmenting my sleep. Really not so much caused by the mouthtape but the chin strap! I have since learned that chinstraps can cause the lower jaw to be pulled back more when the body totally relaxes. Such a position could certainly impact breathing! I think this was happening to me and setting off a cycle of
relax>>jaw repositioned>>event (w/pressure need increase)>>arrousal
In any case, keep working with that Hybrid. If it frustrates you, take a break for a night or two. There are so many variations to try with the fittings! I do find that I get my best fit when I use a mirror for nightly placement. Sounds lame , huh? But I read that hint here and it sure makes a difference for me!
