Mask Comfort
Mask Comfort
I am a newbie to the CPAP world, so a little help would be appreciated. I was fitted and sold a Phillips Respironics System One CPAP machine, along with a Resmed Mirage Quattro mask. I admit that I am still getting use to the whole thing, but overall it seems to be helping. My issue is that even though I tried the mask the way that the technician had adjusted it, it left my nose sore and with a mark and indention that took a while to go away on the first night. I have attemted to readjust it for better comfort, but it still digs into the bridge of my nose. This is not going to work out unless I can come up with a way to make it more comfortable, without leaving it so loose that I create a major air leak. Any suggestions will be appreciated. The other curious thing to me, is why does the machine seem to blow more air when you are on your back, than it does when you are on your side. The air flow seems to drop to about half as much when I roll from my back to my side. Is this normal? Being a side sleeper, I don't really mind the reduced air flow as long as it is enough to keep the airway open. The issue is that I have back problems, so I have to roll over to my back periodically to reduce the back pain, and then it wakes me up until I turn back over on my side. Thanks in advance for any insights that you can provide.

Re: Mask Comfort
First of all, it will help us help you if you would please go into the User Control Panel under the search box and fill in your equipment. Then we can answer your questions about the machine pressure.
As far as the mask, I have mask fitting tips in my blog below under "Taming the Mirage Quattro". But it may not be the best mask for you. So you should call your DME provider and ask to try other masks. It's the DME's job to make sure you can sleep comfortably in your mask all day and they should permit you to return the mask and get another one to try until you find the right one. Some DME's try to limit the number of masks you can try, if that's the case, let us know and we'll give you some ideas. But you do NOT have to be uncomfortable or sleep with leaks all the time. Get your doctor involved if the DME won't help you.

Re: Mask Comfort
I have the same mask and had problems with the way it was adjusted as well. Until I read "Taming the Mirage Quattro". This blog article really helped me to see just how the mask was supposed to fit.
