How long a CPAP machine lasts?

I bought my S9 Elite 4 years ago, it became noisy I cannot spleep with it any more. I will go to my provider this week but he told me that it happens, as it is an old machine and I am afraid that I have to buy a new one. I dont have assurances for it anymore...!

That is why I ask you how long your CPAP machine lasted?

Bon soir Myolin - every machine is different, most insurance companies give new ones every 5 years, but if the machine you have was not new to begin with (do you know how many hours of use it has?) then you need to talk to the company about that. Most machines will last longer than 5 yrs, depending on how good they are and how much they're used... there's no exact time limit of course for any machine. Can you possibly afford my machine (click on the blue line under this post)? It's less expensive than e.g. the S9 autoset or PR S1, but can give you lots of data and is very reliable (quiet and smaller than others too). It's advertised as a 'travel' machine because of the size, but is just as good - long term - as the others, and I've had it maybe 4 yrs and i expect to have it for another few. Je suis de Mtl, mais pas per long temps - mon francais et tout oublie!

My first CPAP (a PR machine, don't remember which model) lasted 7 yrs & was still working when I got my PR M Series. I traded it in for the M Series (I didn't know anything about unscrupulous DME's back then) & that damn M Series barely got me thru the 5 yr period to replacement (it started having trouble at about the 3 1/2 yr mark).

Julie's suggestion for a new machine seems budget conscious. Two good sources to purchase a used machine are this forum (if the seller is one that long-time forum members trust - you can tell from reading the post), and secondwindcpap.com. Secondwind has a warranty too. Another source to purchase used is Craigslist, but make sure you do your homework before buying from an individual. Also, don't go to see anyone from a Craigslist listing alone, take someone with you, its safer.

Last machine a PR BiPap Auto M-Series was 6yrs old.. Now my backup machine still works well. My insurance replaces after 3yrs but I've only had them for 2 years which is one of the problems, the Insurance coverage changes every year sometimes to different companies.

The first Respironics Pro 2 I started with in 2005 developed a little "wheeze" in the C-Flex function at about a year. I sent it in to the factory under warranty and it came back (same machine) and has been very quiet since. But, I don't use it all the time anymore as I tend to somewhat rotate my usage on the ones I have. Over the years, I have purchased more of the same and similar machines and have not had any problems with any of them. My machines have anywhere from a couple of hundred hours to over 10,000 hours on one I purchased in 2010. But, that's why I have chosen to have multiple machines......backups for my backups. I sleep better that way.

I would not be comfortable trying to use only one machine......worrying about it failing me at the worst possible time. I've read too many stories over the years of people having theirs fail in the middle of the night (or dragged off of their night stand and broken or filled with water).
All things being equal, they should last 5, 10, 15 years. But, not all things ARE equal and it's hard to predict how long these newer models will last. The companies need those sales to stay in business, so I suspect they've built in some "planned obsolescence".

I bought my machine new and I figured that I used it about 8,500 hours. I thought it was not much but I just replaced my 1976 refrigerator for new one that will serve about 6-8 years, such is the market today!

Hi - Just wanted to say that the second review of my machine on the product pg, from "Rey" is silly - he didn't understand how autopap works (hopefully has learned) so blamed the machine and process for problems, but it does work as it should, so ignore his note.

My SULLIVAN VI ELITE (before Sullivan became ResMed) lasted 13 years and still works. I think the older machines with less electronics could last a very long time. My Sullivan was just a plain blower. No sensors to detect AHI, leaks, etc. I had a passover humidifier (so wasn't heated). So a simple blower will likely last many years. But they don't make many simple blowers anymore. I think the ResMed Escape qualifies as a simple blower. There are probably others out there.

It is sorta like modern vehicles. The more electronic controls, the more that can go wrong.

My father's PR 550 started cutting out/dying. Something with the electronics I'd assume. It was from 2011. So a bit shorter lifespan than I'd expect. But Medicare gave him a new 560 despite being shorter than 5 years.
