Used to CPAP now, but still weird sleep patterns.

Post by Napnea » Tue Sep 23, 2014 3:54 pm

I have adjusted to the thing pretty comfortably and tolerate it well, ....BUT....

I am still dozing off too early in the evening.
I am DONE at 8:30-9 seemingly no matter what.
I just doze off.

Now if by chance I do make it to 10 or 11, I have a VERY good CPAP night. Get up around a NORMAL 7 or 8 and go from there.

I can tell that I have more energy during the day from the CPAP as I now wake feeling like tackling projects and doing things.
Libido is noticeably increased and all-in-all I think it's doing its job.

BUT (again) when I CPAP myself to sleep at 9 or so, I will wake up at 2:45-3:45 on a regular basis.
AND.....with nobody else up til 8 or 9 AM, I end up goiing in the living room and....... DOZING..... again (without CPAP) in my recliner with boring TV on.

Soooooooooooooo..... I end up each night with 6 or more hours of CPAP and 1-2 of no CPAP.

Suggestions other than a night watchman job?

I do NOT know how to regulate my PATTERN.

I think I'll ....try... afternoon nap to see if it can change the bedTIME!

Is there any way you can arrange to use a small, maybe older and cheaper machine (data not being a factor) to be hooked up near where you nap? Those few minutes can make a difference to things! And why attempt a 9 pm bedtime if it's not working - maybe if you 'papped' the naps, you could stay up later and get onto a more normal pattern.

I "two sleep" a lot, especially during the work week with lots of stuff going on. Common to head for bed around 9pm and then wake up somewhere around midnight to 2am, get up... do some work (I am most creative and alert during this time), stay up until around 3-3:30am and then go back to bed for another 4-1/2 hours or so till I get up for the day.

I never watch TV during that period of time and if I am tired, I just head back to bed.

It is rare that I will doze off on my Recliner watching TV except perhaps during the day in the afternoon on a weekend while a game is on, and if I find myself doing that, I head into the bedroom for a nap.

I've considered taking my previous machine and setting it up by the recliner so that I could take naps, but don't think I would do it enough to be worth the hassle. I would get better sleep in bed anyway if that is what I am trying to do.

Hi Napnea

When you go to bed at 10/11 and sleep for 7/8 hours what time can you stay awake to next day?

Have you tried a 30 minute power nap around lunch time? They help me a lot.

My schedule mimics your almost exactly and has been this way for 2 years. I don't mind though I'm retired so nowhere special to be most of the time. I don't make early Dr appts. I try to exercise in the morning and I feel 1000% better than before Cpap. Sometimes the medical community makes unrealistic promises . At least that what happened to me.
I now realise this is maybe the best I will ever feel but I am receiving the best treatment possible and am great fun for that. Best of luck

That is interesting; I thought I was unique in having that sort of sleep pattern. I have been doing that for about 3 years.

And I started needing to get up to pee in the middle of the night about 5 years ago, which is how this split sleep thing started. Now that the APAP is working it keeps me from having to get up to pee, so I don't get an opportunity to be up between sleep sessions. If things work out well, I am just asleep for one long session with no pee break.

The only real issue I have is that if I fall asleep unexpectedly and don't APAP, I will indeed wake up about 2:00 having to pee, but then I at least can get some APAP from that point forward. I am trying to get more sleep, which I think will be good and maybe keep me from falling asleep unexpectedly.

I have much more energy than I did before I started CPAP about 6 weeks ago. At first, this was great because the apnea made me feel tired almost daily. But now, I'm concerned that I might be manic. I didn't sleep well last night, but I had to work late and drank some coffee. I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine. Also, if I suddenly change my sleeping routine, I often can't sleep. So I got up at 5 AM. I made a big breakfast for myself. I shaved and brushed. There were dishes in the sink and I cleaned them all, which is a bit weird for me because I'm not the one who does dishes in my house. Now it's 6:30 AM and I still feel energetic.

Maybe I'm looking for problems that aren't there, but I have had bouts of mania before. I have a good idea of how it feels. I did see something on a CPAP site about "CPAP high." I hope I get used to the energy or move toward a happy medium. I hope I can create a healthy sleep routine and stick to it.
