battery for Bipap

Post by tilton » Thu Sep 11, 2014 11:35 pm

My husband has a Philips Respironic ST system one Bipap and we want to buy a battery because we have encountered black-out in our house many times. It costs almost $500 if we order from Apria. CPAP.COM has several of them but they could not tell me which one is the most appropriated. I heard that it can be subsituted with a Deep cycle marine battery but I don't know which one is appropriated for my husband's Bipap? Can anyone tell me where to buy and which one is suitable for the Bipap. Thanks

Best regards

This is a question that's been discussed many times - if you search you'll find many posts.

The good news: a backup system can be put together with easy to get parts for about $150. The bad news: some assembly required, Easy stuff - if you've changed a car battery (or even jump started one) you should be able to do this, but if you have no experience, get a friend to help.

Four basic parts are needed:
1. Power cable for Remstar. Cpap.com should have the appropriate 12V cable (series 50 and 60 are different) with cigarette lighter plug for about $25.

2. A Deep Cycle battery. Most are called "marine" but it must say "deep cycle." Walmart etc has them starting at about $70. Make sure it has terminals that are easy to connect to. This should have enough power for two nights with humidifier, a week or more without.

3. A Charger. The safest is a small trickle charger that can't over charge the battery. The best is "Battery Tender" - $25 for the small version, $50 for the large which is preferable if you have frequent outages. The large comes with some cables including a fuse.

4. A few extras - you need a box since the biggest risk is putting a metal object across the terminals. Under $10 at marine supply or Amazon. You'll need a cigarette lighter socket - Battery Tender brand will work with their charger cables; also under $10.

That's it - if this looks like what you want to do reply with any questions or concerns.

First of I hope your model ST is newer and the 12V model, I think the older models were 24V which is another problem.

2nd, I don't know if you are the do-it-yourself type but if you are use the Advanced Search feature and type in "My Camping Battery Box" (I can't post links) or I would. This fella does a nice job, has pics and more realistic prices included. The battery box, while a bit more expensive, has some nice features and includes the DC power outlet so that saves some trouble and assembly.

While he lists his cost at $361. you may save by trimming of some things you don't need like the Resmed DC-DC converter or USB Ports. If you do need USB for something you can get an adapter which will fit into the DC power outlet.

If you are not into the assembly part there is a post from today where the guy uses a "Sears JumpStart Platinum Portable Power 1150" cost $130 and the Respironics DC cord $30 which seems reasonably priced and is a plug-n-play kind of battery power option for cpap or bipap users. I think this jumpstarter already has a USB port and an AC inverter.

Whatever option you choose, be sure to charge the unit (or battery) for a day or two before use and certainly try things out at home to be certain they meet your expectations.
