Best nose pillow for side sleeper?
Best nose pillow for side sleeper?
Am getting first cpap and reading posts about nose pillows slipping when changing position. I toss a lot but spend a good bit of night on my side. Any suggestions as to which type to start with that would be less likely to shift? Thanks for replies. So glad to find this wonderful site!
Re: Best nose pillow for side sleeper?
Welcome Sleepysuz!
I'm pretty new in these parts too (about a month) and have only tried the AirFit P10 For Her. It's a great mask for me, but it took me a while to figure things out. Expect a period of trial and error, no matter what mask(s) you use.
I'm a side sleeper too. For me, the key was to figure out how to keep my neck stable AND simultaneously make room for my mask. I didn't try the CPAP pillow, but I bought a buckwheat hull/millet combo pillow (the Bucky Duo). Prior to therapy I had been using a TempurPedic pillow and loving it, but it just doesn't work with my mask. (You know how springy the TempurPedic is -- well, it kept springing into my mask and dislodging it.) This meant that my nasal pillows would get scraped around and I woke up with red, irritated nares and even the beginning of blisters -- even when I used lanolin on the pillows. Things improved immediately with the buckwheat hull pillow. I settle my head on it, dig out a little area for my mask, and go to sleep. When I switch sides I need to do that again, but it's a pretty quick process for me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm having other irritating problems , but nasal irritation and a slipping mask are no longer on that list!
Good luck!

To someone with OSA, this saying takes on a whole new meaning:

I like the swift fx. Adjustable headgear (the p10 is a weird 1 size fits most design), strong venting, pretty quiet if you don't block the vent port.

Re: Best nose pillow for side sleeper?
Used the Swift FX for 6 months with great success, but my 2 months with the airfit p10 has been even better. I have a large head (7 7/8), so I have to spread the strap as wide, but its always stayed in place even if I move my head. The Swift FX had one position that worked for me. Any movement & it might dislodge the pillow (more a nuisance than "problem"). The only real issue with the Swift FX is the blast of air from the vent. If it hit the bedding it made a lot of noise. If it hit the spouse, she made a lot of noise.

Once I got a buckwheat pillow, I pitched the FFM. I have since used the Swift LT, FX and now the P10. My leaks are almost gone with the P10.

Nuance is slightly more stable than the P10 I found, but the gel pillows don't wedge my nostrils open so much (the P10 does this and I like the effect).

I'm a side sleeper and love (if one can love any mask) the Airfit P10! I kind of bury my head in the pillow and the mask stays there... very few leaks.

I'm a side sleeper. Airfit P10 and Swift FX both worked for me. The problem with the Swift FX was when I was sleeping on my side facing my partner and she was on her side facing me, the exhaust from the Swift FX hit her in the face and woke her up.

I really love the Pilairo Q, I would call it kind of a hibrid... it has pillows but also grips/encloses your nose and has all but eliminated my leaks... sometimes it sits on my upper lip but it has not bothered me at all, it does bother some people though...
Every mask fits different and everyone's face is different, it took me 5 masks to find this one that works for me..

Welcome Sleepy !
airfit P 10 for me hands down. 7 months ago i would have never made such a comment.
Reasons: minimal headgear
easy on/off
stability (flopper also)
comfort
easy to clean pillows

Re: Best nose pillow for side sleeper?
No one has mentioned the Tap Pap yet. There is no head gear. There is a bite mold mouth piece that hold the pillows in place.
That said I can not tollerate the pillows in my nose. My nostrils get raw and red. I prefer a nasal mask like the Wisp or the Sleepweaver Elan.
The mask is very personal. Unless you are very lucky and try the last mask first, many of us go through a dozen or more masks before we find one we like. I find the one I like and after six months or a year, I find I no longer like it that much and move on to a newer and better (or worse) mask.
When my nose is congested I go to a full face masklike the Fisher and Paykel Flex Fit FC431.

I use the Nuance. At first I had problems with it slipping when I rolled over, but I finally got everything where I like it, and sleep most of the night on my side now.I usually switch sides at least once or twice a night even.

I need to mold the new bite plate on my Tap Pap.
I've been putting it off for a good (just checked the receipt) since June of last year.

Re: Best nose pillow for side sleeper?
For stomach and side sleeping, my first choice is the Aloha and my second would have to be the swift LT. You may want to look into a good cpap bed pillow too.
