Wow - first night questions

Post by FreeIndeed » Thu Jul 31, 2014 9:22 pm

Hi all! I posted back when on this thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=98271&p=911325#p911325 about whether to go DME or buy myself. Well, my insurance wouldn't let me go online, so I found a DME in town. I was really apprehensive, but it ended up being a great experience. They set me up with a Resmed S9 with humidifier and heated hose, which is what I wanted, and last night was my first night. My mask is a resmed Airfit P10 full face and was actually pretty comfortable at first, but it leaked like crazy.I had to tighten down the straps and then it leak checked ok. It was a little less comfortable with the straps tight, but I'm not sure that there's a way around that.

Anyway, here are my first questions:
1) My mouth was still majorly dry, even with the humidifier. I can;t seem to directly change humidification settings, only the temperature it's set at. It's set at 80 and I'm not sure which way to go for more moisture, but I'm going to try colder tonight. That sound right? Apparently he machine makes some calculations and adjusts on it's own...

2) My setting is 13, which felt like I was riding on a roller coaster with my mouth own. It had so much air coming at me that it would kind of bl;ow my cheeks open. Is that normal? I don;t know what it should feel like.

3) I THINK that I felt a lot less tired than normal today, so I really hope it's working. I figured it'd take 4 or 5 days to get used to wearing the headgear and feeling like s dog with his head out the window of a car.

I'm really hopeful - I need this to work. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Which ResMed S9? There will be a model name near the on/off switch. What is that model name?

Do you have the heated Climateline hose? If so, increasing the temperature will increase the absolute amount of moisture in the air (it will be 80% relative humidity at whatever temperature you set - the higher the temperature, the higher the absolute humidity).

However, your mouth is probably dry because you are breathing with your mouth open. We can verify that once we are sure you have a machine that records detailed data (hence the question about which S9 you have).

Regarding the feeling that there is a gale in your face: that's pretty normal at first - eventually you'll get used to it.

Watch the video tutorial on the S9 that I've linked to in my signature box. You'll see where all the climate control features are and how you can adjust them. Very helpful to learn.

I don;t have the machine with me, but it's a autoset that they set up as a CPAP. I think they may have restricted some menu choices from em as well....

That's where the video comes in, heh heh.
You can "unrestrict" them.

In regard to your dry mouth, I refer you to this thread that I just posted on about my solution to the problem:
viewtopic/t99575/New-User-Extreme-Dry-Mouth.html

Also, curious about your mask; you say you have AirFit P10 full face mask... the P10 is a pillows mask, the AirFit full face mask is F10... same one I have that I refer to in the above link.

I'll check the links out - thanks! I do have the climatehose and the mask is probably an F10 - I just forgot. The lady at the DME said they were just getting these masks in so I wanted on them becasue I wanted one that went around the ears NOT on my forehead.

Now it's time to go home and try night #2!

I just picked up the AirFit N10 version (just goes over the nose) - maybe it's something with the way airfit's work, but I had to tighten mine down a little as well due to leaks. The first mask they had me on (well, I chose, but I've got to start somewhere) was the Eson - but that forehead piece is what drove me nuts there. Otherwise, the nose piece fit like a dream for me.

Because of the tightening of the straps, the nose piece just doesn't feel all that comfortable. I even tried loosening it up again like how I wore it with the Eson, but the leaks came back

I know you're using the full face, but I'm actually really surprised that for the nose mask I don't feel that "rush" of wind..... until I go to remove the mask LOL! It's actually a comfortable breathing sensation. I'm not a mouth breather so it works well for me.

I'm giving the N10's this weekend before I trade that one in for something else. Actually I might call in today. It's really that bothersome to me for it to be tight.

Well, last night was a little worse I think. The mask seemed to leak when it ramped up to full, so I had to tighten the headgear down a lot. And my mouth was Sahara dry. My breathing seems natural when the machine is ramped to 7 or 8, but by the time it hits 13 it's gale force winds. Again, I don't know - maybe I actually need that. Tonight I want to play with the settings a bit and read my data. I also have to read the thread on dry mouth.

Free indeed - is your mask an F10 or a P10, and how narrow is the bridge of your nose? I found the F10 medium and large could not seal on my narrow nose bridge at all, but the Quattro Air (which uses the same cushions) could. But I switched to pillows with nasal rinsing and now use P10 with great success.

Make sure that you are washing your face off really good just before you mask up for the night.
If you have oil or dirt on your face you will not be able to get a good seal on the mask.

I wish you well
