Specific help for his machine

Post by the wife » Wed Jul 09, 2014 9:26 pm

I am starting a new post because I cannot read anymore of the attacks on the other post. I realize that I did not explain myself well as you guys think I was going to kick him out in the middle of the night. I am the one who has gotten up each night -- if you checked the time, it was written at 3am -- I was awake all night for the 4th night in a row because of the noise, and I was searching for something that might help when I found your page. I expected to get hassled some, but not as much as I got. I obviously want him to succeed with this. I would not have asked for your help if I did not.

My husband is currently using a new transcend ezex with a mirage (the one that fits on his nose). He has the machine on the floor and the hose hung up so that it doesn't rub.
He tried a full face mask when he got the Transcend machine, but it squealed.

If you ladies and gentleman have any other ideas to try to help the situation, please let me know. The current noise is a loud whoosh out and a louder whoosh in and occasionally a loud squeal. It starts as soon as he turns the machine on and gets louder until about the middle of the night when it quiets down some.

It is wonderful to know you have "thick skin" and can endure some well meaning but perhaps misplaced suggestions...

My suggestion is to have both of you go to bed early. Try not to fall asleep but just lay there and listen to the noises. When he hears the noise, see if some wiggling around changes it. If it does, then you will have an idea of what is causing it. The squeal is a "mask fart" and may be helped by just a very little tighter pull on the straps that hold everything in place. You don't want to get too tight but a little snugger may help.

Actually just have him go to bed and you can pull up a chair next to him and poke and prod to find the source of the noise.

If the noise is coming from the machine, an extra length of hose coupled to the one you have will allow you to shove the machine under the bed and that should muffle any noise coming from the machine.

If the noise is coming from the vent on the mask, you can make an effort to point it in a different direction so it isn't blowing against something.

If the noise is coming from the mask, you may have to suggest trying a different mask that fits a little differently and in doing so eliminates the noise.

If all of this doesn't help, we may have to go

Outside The Box...

From outside the box consider this. Pick up an inexpensive used machine and set it up for yourself. I know you don't need it but the idea is that if both of you are making noises one may cancel the other out.

OK, that is way out there but just think about it. I hope more traditional methods prevail and you are finally able to get a good nights uninterrupted sleep.

search for 'mask liners' here on the forum, there's a number of them, and they really will help cut down on extra noise from the mask, removing the squealing/farting noise that some of them make sometimes.

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with the noise (and the attacks from those who misunderstood)... a couple of the last posts on your other thread did have some nice responses with good suggestions... you could go back there and click on the little "page3" icon to bypass the other pages. "Nick Danger" especially had good suggestions - if I recall correctly, it was the last or second to last post.

I would think that a white noise machine that has lots of sounds to choose from would help. you could perhaps find one you like that acts like a lullaby and maybe the other noises won't bother you. Those machines are not loud, but they do cancel out annoying sounds. Good luck!

The only CPAP machine I know about is the machine I have myself but I know that I think all of them will have a little noise if there working properly and after a while you should get used to it and hardly hear it at all. What it sounds like you are having difficulty with is the mask I know some masks will make a noise if there not adjusted right or two loose when you put it on. I don't really have any more ideas for you but maybe you should also check to make sure your cpap filters and equipment is clean and is not worn out.

Did you buy the Transcend machine privately? No DME or insurance involved?
It isn't known to be a super quiet machine anyway...despite what the manufacturer says.
Not many forum members use that machine and even less were happy with it in general.

The loud whoosh in and whoosh out sounds...could be inhale and exhale motor noise differential. Does the machine have some sort of exhale feature where the pressure drops a little on exhale?

Hang in there...

I know its 1 more day, and I dont know what your finance looks like.... but, if you order this on amazon you can have it in 1 day and atleast try it for the weekend... I wish you luck and hang in there, it does get better... after 4 years, my wife does not even notice it... ( other than the octupus hanging off my face, LOL......)
My wife was the same way, we bought a white noise machine and it worked...

http://www.amazon.com/Ecotones-Sound-Sl ... 002SMJQT4/

It has 10 differant sounds and a volume settings... Find 1 of the sounds that work for you ( we love the rain with slight thunder) and start at a low volume.. after about a week turn it up 1 and do that every week for 4 or 5 weeks... at the end of 5 weeks you will be sleeping sound and not hear a train come through you bedroom.. my wife stopped turning it up when she could not hear my machine or mask...

Sounds like the double whammy - a machine that has some sound problems, and a mask that leaks. Each can be fixed, but probably not at the same time. If you got your machine from a supplier where you can try another, do that - the mask can maybe be helped by the liner fix, but the suggestion that you sit by the bed and "poke and prod" is the most immediate that you can do. You can make a liner out of an old t-shirt, by just cutting the material in the shape of the mask, so it fills the space between the face and mask.
