Watch out for Fake and unauthorized SleepyHead websites.

Post by jedimark » Sun Jul 06, 2014 11:48 pm

Just letting people know I did not set up sleepyheadcpap[dot]com, and it has absolutely nothing to do with what SleepyHead software project.

I was actually planning on registering it, but someone else beat me to it. (tough I guess.) It looks like someone is doing something dodgy to capitalise on SleepyHead searches, no logo though... The fact they plan on placing a donation button is a bit creepy.

As of July 2014, the only authorized SleepyHead websites are sleepyhead.sourceforge.net, sourceforge.net/projects/sleepyhead and the new SleepFiles.com/SH file host.

There are probably plenty more sneaky ones hiding around the net.

Is there any way to stop this?

Apart from big scary Lawyers? I don't know.

They were registered by Go[]daddy.. renowned for [letting through] many traffic pilfering cruft sites.

The best to handle these kind of domains is not referencing them directly, so google ranks them down the bottom.

if godaddy get spam complaints they will shut it down, if one can get spam complaints high enough they will shut down the domain.

that would be your best bet to shut them down.

can not believe some one would set up a donation button for software they had no hand in making. that is a new one on me, they should be stopped and shut down. anything for a buck now days. I can not believe how low some will go to make a buck. that is just low, real low.

maybe it is time to fire up a spam complaint campaign to godaddy to get them shut down.

I just did my part and filed a complaint with godaddy.

I also went to the site that won't be named. It has pictures of two (cute and very little) kids wearing PAP masks and a barebones template page with no meaningful content. Right now the "pay pal" button is just a .gif file that doesn't "do anything."

Still, it's best to try to snip this think in the bud. Maybe if enough people do complain, the site will be yanked ...

the trouble with getting them shut down is they can move to a new host. this happens all the time with pron and crack sites. if they're making money, switching hosts all the time is just a business cost. it is impossible to get someone shut down and keep them down if they are determined to stay up. if somehow abc.com is taken away they can always come back with abc.org, etc...

It's sad that someone has the time and inclination to rip off something like Sleepyhead and Jedimark. The bottom of the fish tank gene pool needs cleaning

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

if the donate link is not active, and the site is very sub par at best. the owner may sell you the domain for very cheap, like cost or a tad bit of a profit.

would be good to contact him/her and see if they will sell it. would be a good domain for you to have.

at least one should try to resolve it nicely before going to war over it....LOL

just my 2 cents

So what you are saying is that next time you are robbed or your identity is stolen you should try to resolve it nicely instead of calling the police?

When dealing with ANYONE on the internet........I am never surprised. This is not at all surprising. I would have been more surprised had it not had taken place.
With people on the internet, expect the worst and you will never be surprised.

they did not steal the domain, domains are given out on a first come first served basis, the sleepyhead programmer should have bought the domain long ago, but did not, so someone else did. very legal, speaking on a purely legal basis, no stealing involved, technically speaking. you snooze you loose, the point now is how best to deal with where we find ourselves. I just pointed out what I thought would be a good course of action. BTW, the cops can do nothing about this, there was no laws broken or even bent here. immoral and unjust actions, yes, but no laws broken or even bent, so nothing the cops can do.

Yes, as distasteful as it may sound.

Just as how it is often to a mans best interest when wealthy or a celebrity/or both to settle out of court quietly even if accused of rape, rather than go to trial and have the news, although false hit the media for then it will have a life of its own that no one can control.
As distasteful as some things might sound, its smarter and wiser to go about them in such a manner as that poster has wisely suggested, otherwise it will cost far more to go to "war" ------

Simply an analogy. You won't be able to fight GoDaddy. Best to buy the website address if it can be purchased......its the price of doing business........and the mistake of the URL not having been purchased much earlier

it can most likely be purchased
this is what url sitters do
they buy up website name/addressess before they are needed
and hope to sell at a price that all can be happy with
and hope that somewhere they have bought one that a major corporation will pay megabucks for
sleepyhead software they would not expect to have much money
and would likely/hopefully sell at a reasonable price IF the url sitter believes he cannot get any more for it

I am not a lawyer but would question the legality of the "donation" button - if they activate it. That could possibly be considered wire fraud? Domains are not selling for very much on eBay these days, so perhaps BlackSpinner is correct?
