Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
I hope we can clear this up for all time. Whenever newbies come on this forum and we warn them to avoid the Escape Auto, we never tell them how to tell if they are being handed an Escape Auto.
I've been looking at Google Images of Escape Autos, and it appears to me that the words "Escape Auto" clearly appear just above the on/off button on the far lefthand side. But I've never seen a ResMed S9 in the flesh, so I'm asking you all if that's the case?
If you have an Escape Auto (sorry!) does it say Escape Auto right above the button?
And does it say Autoset for the autosets?
Is there a model number anywhere on the machine that would also help newbies sort this out???
This way, when we tell newbies to avoid the Escape Auto, we can tell them where to look.

Thanks, that's EXACTLY what I wanted to know. So now, we can tell people "Look for the model name right above the on/off switch on the left hand side of the LCD display window. Do not accept it if it says "Escape" or "Escape Auto"."
I'm going to change my blog! Is it OK if I "borrow" your photos?

Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
ResMed S9 machines....all have the model name clearly stated in that same place on the blower unit.
There is a ref model number on a sticker but it is so easy to just read/look at the model name I don't go into model numbers when talking about the S9.
Now of course the PR System One machines...different story and the wording on the machine and humidifier is confusing to newbies so I stick with asking for model numbers to avoid confusion.
My S9 VPAP Auto...clearly said VPAP Auto on it and now the S9 Adapt SV clearly says VPAP Adapt.

And there's also the ELITE, which is like the Autoset but it's CPAP instead of APAP. Has all the good data stuff.

resmed is *pretty* good at labeling the S9 range, the only one that is ambiguous is the VPAP Adapt, there's two models, the old and new, both say VPAP Adapt.Janknitz wrote:I hope we can clear this up for all time. Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
While we're clearing things up, exactly what does an Escape Auto record?
If you look at the data with SleepyHead or ResScan, will you see a single AHI and pressure numbers per night, or will you see a graph of pressure vs. time during the night? Does it indicate OA, CA, Hypopnea, Alien Abduction, etc.?
Can anyone post a SleepyHead report from an Escape Auto?

As a followup to the above question. if you have a script which specifies an autoset machine (not the Escape auto), does that guarantee that the machine will also have full efficiency data reporting, or is there an autoset machine which does not have full reporting capability?archangle wrote:While we're clearing things up, exactly what does an Escape Auto record?

the escape auto is an auto machine that does not provide efficacy data, so, yes.JQLewis wrote: As a followup to the above question. if you have a script which specifies an autoset machine (not the Escape auto), does that guarantee that the machine will also have full efficiency data reporting, or is there an autoset machine which does not have full reporting capability?

Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
I think that with ResScan the Escape Auto only shows the statistics page. No detailed graphs I don't think.archangle wrote: If you look at the data with SleepyHead or ResScan, will you see a single AHI and pressure numbers per night, or will you see a graph of pressure vs. time during the night? Hours of use...AHI (no breakdown into categories though....and pressure but I have never been able to figure out exactly which pressure number as in median average or 95% pressure number.
If that is the case I doubt Sleepyhead will show anything at all unless Mark has fixed SleepyHead so that it can do calculations without having the detailed files available. Sort of like what happens when we leave the SD card out of the S9 and SleepyHead says the machine wasn't used at all but ResScan will at least show the statistics page.
I did that very thing a couple of weeks ago. SH says I didn't use the machine but of course I did.
The ResMed page just says AHI and pressure and hours of use. Since it also says "no high resolution" I assume no graphs

Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
If the prescription says "S9 AutoSet" and "dispense as written," in theory the DME cannot legally dispense anything other than an S9 AutoSet.JQLewis wrote:As a followup to the above question. if you have a script which specifies an autoset machine (not the Escape auto), does that guarantee that the machine will also have full efficiency data reporting, or is there an autoset machine which does not have full reporting capability?
If it says "S9 Auto", or doesn't specify "dispense as written," they might be able to legally dispense an S9 Escape Auto.
Even if it says the right things, the DME may deliberately dispense the wrong machine and claim it's a mistake. They might call the doctors office and try to get it changed.
All S9 AutoSet machines are fully data capable.
There's an S8 Autoset that collects a lot less data and uses a non-standard data card that's hard to access, but that's several years out of production. There are probably some DME's who are still reselling used rental S8 machines.

Just for added input my ResMed 9 says: VPAP S Easy-Breath. Model number: 36004A
Wasn't listed in previous post.
I have pictures... can't figure out how to add them.

Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
One way around the Escape Auto is to have the doctor write "Access to leak data" in the prescription. The Escape does NOT provide leak data. So they can't dispense the Escape Auto unless they play games "Oh, we thought it had that data".

Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
My doctor specified the autoset as he wanted the data. He has sleep apnea himself, so he has more incentive to care about the data than many doctors.

Re: Escape Auto--Let's Clear this Up
Let me tell you that you also will want a script of the mask you want, as well. It must say the actual name of the mask and "medically necessary" or whatever today's saying is that means No Substitutes. Otherwise, you end up with a mask they think is comparable and just happens to be what they have on hand. I asked for a specific pillow mask that was very popular that the time online here (thus I knew the exact name and even the manufacturer) for my last test. I got stuck with a choice of a pillow called the GoLife or a Swift Fx. I tried the Swift Fx as it was also very popular and it folded over in my nose on the left nostril so I took the GoLife. I endured that thing with felt wrapped around it on the upper cheek bone plastic that was too high up on my face until I was eligible for a new mask.
most places and therapists carry only the two or three most popular masks for you to try and the rest are a special request. the special request can take a week to get and you may have to pay for it if it's not listed on your prescription. I think this is just as important as the right machine, but all I know on the machine is what I can see on the machine itself. I know most of you know a lot more than me about this sickness and what the latest equipment is. I'm just happy and thankful that I'm finally comfortable at night and that my spouse isn't bothered with me getting up several times a night to "fix my mask".
I would like to know why Resmed sells an inferior machine to the good one recommended by everyone and the two look exactly alike. Why would they confuse people like that? They should have pulled the look-alike with almost the same name off the market. I see a lot of people getting suck with the inferior one here just like I got stuck with inferior masks (at least for me). We shouldn't have to go in for a sleep test and know the Exact Model Number of the machine or we're screwed.
That's crazy, right? Pull the look-alike bad stuff off the market so the doctor gives the right stuff or make the better new machines look different. that's a no-brainer.
