trying to find power draw info for my unit
trying to find power draw info for my unit
I have been using a CPAP for several years. We camp a lot and always have hookups for power. Next year I am planning a motorcycle trip and where we will be camping has no electrical hookups. I am looking at options for myself and another gentleman to power our units. My problem is that I cannot find the wattage draw for my ResMed S8 2 Escape unit. They have the amp draw but not the wattage posted. I am trying to figure out how small of a generator I can get away with or how large of a solar charger would I need to maintain a battery. My problem is that generators and solar chargers are all rated by wattage output.

Re: trying to find power draw info for my unit
I believe Volts X Amps = Watts.

Ah ok. Thanks. So when I factor that and get like 7.25 watts that is watts per hour I assume.

Re: trying to find power draw info for my unit
Yeah that is the one I was referencing but there was no wattage info. I forgot how to figure that. Thanks
Re: trying to find power draw info for my unit
There's no such thing as "watts per hour." Watts is an instantaneous measure of power. You need a battery system that will supply enough watts for enough hours to do the job.phenrichs wrote:Ah ok. Thanks. So when I factor that and get like 7.25 watts that is watts per hour I assume.

Re: trying to find power draw info for my unit
From the S8 Escape II manual:
Power Supply • Input range for S8 Escape II Auto with H4i:100–240V, 50/60Hz; 110V,
400Hz; 2.5A < 140VA (110W) (maximum power consumption).
Instantaneous peak power consumption <340VA.
• Refer to the DC-12 converter instructions for DC ratings. Only use
the ResMed DC-12 converter for DC input.
• Typical power consumption at 20 cm H20 is 34VA or 20W.
And, additionally:
CAUTIONS
• At low pressures, the flow through the exhalation ports of your mask may not
clear all exhaled gas from the tubing. Some rebreathing may occur.
• The airflow for breathing produced by this device can be as much as 11ºF
(6ºC) higher than the temperature of the room. Caution should be exercised if
the room temperature is warmer than 90ºF (32ºC).
• When AC mains power (100–240V AC) is not available, always use a ResMed
DC-12 converter. (The DC-12 converter is available as an optional accessory. It
is not supplied with all models.)
Note: The above are general warnings and cautions. Specific warnings,
cautions, and notes appear with the relevant instructions in the manual.

The 110W rating is sort of a "safety" rating. Among other things, it's the worst case combination of leak rate, pressure, and other settings. It's also probably short term. The battery life will depend on average power consumption over a few hours.

Re: trying to find power draw info for my unit
A couple things to think of...
The solar option will be limited by your battery capacity and charging availability. Not sure if you want to lug a heavy battery with you. And you'd probably have to find a way to charge while you're riding; whether it's through your bike's charging system or the solar panels at the camp site.
The generator option may work if you can find one that travels easily. I've seen a smaller 800 watt generator that got decent reviews. It's 16"X 8"X 14". Only 21 lbs and quiet at 59 db; according to their info. Slightly bigger than a battery but might be an option. It's a Chinese made Honda knock off but it's about $285; instead of the $750 for the Honda 1000 watt. Its an Earthquake IG800W. 800 watts would be more than enough to run 2 machines and some other gear.
