Is it normal to need naps every day?

Post by Pesser » Sun May 04, 2014 10:27 am

How many people take naps? I have had sleep problems all my life. Even with CPAP and 100% use I still need a nap. Sometimes two. And this with about 6 hours of sleep. Is this normal?

I don't know how to start a poll! I would like to start one on this or see someone start one!

Enjoy!

Just don't expect a pot of gold at the end of the nap.

Maybe you need more than six hours of sleep per night?

CPAP fixes only breathing. It doesn't affect sleep as a whole. If you want to "consolidate" your sleep into one stretch, you could work on skipping the nap and going to bed a little earlier. The term for googling is "sleep hygiene."

PS "100% use" does mean that you use your machine during naps, right?

I nap most days for about an hour. At this point in time, I am still tweaking my therapy (just switched from APAP to BIPAP), and I'm hoping that eventually I won't feel the need for a nap anymore. I get between 7-8 hours of sleep most nights nowadays (recently retired). When I was working, it was usually only 7 hours a night. The sleep doc I had at the time did not see a problem with an hour's nap to supplement the night-time sleep.

I take naps quite often... After about 6 months of therapy I finally didn't NEED a nap. Now, when I can take a nap I quite often do.

When my neurologist reviews my sleep data she does not really like it. I told her that I had sleep debt to pay and that I want to pay it off before I am 60
So, I can enjoy my retirement.

I wish you well....

I no longer nap. At one point my neuro wanted me to nap daily, but my life grew more hectic once my seizures stopped, so at that time my naps stopped as well. When I napped I tried to limit a nap to 1/2 to 3/4 an hour, & always got up right after I woke up. Also I always use CPAP during a nap.

Due to some recent family stress (or hell) I've napped trying to 'replace' some missed sleep. I used my machine but the nap just made the tiredness worse. For me, I really do better without the nap & just go to bed a little earlier when I'm really sleep deprived.

I agree with the others. That ain't nearly enough sleep.

But, I still like to take an occasional nap.

I probably could use a nap but I've never been able to nap, no matter how tired and sleepy I am. Doze off for a minute or two yes, nap no. I've been a lifelong poor sleeper.

After a year on BiPAP I too am sleeping slightly over 6 hours. That doesn't sound like much until you consider that before therapy I would sleep between 2 and 4 hours, and fragmented at that. I wake up in the morning now rearing to go and generally have good energy most all the day, as long as I'm moving around. No more brain fog. But if I sit down to watch TV mid afternoon I'll be dozy in no time. I thought there might be something wrong with my therapy so I asked my new doc and he said it was perfectly normal, that my circadian rhythms kick in around 5:30 am and 3:00 pm. I always thought circadian rhythms varied per individual and other factors but I'll take his word and stop worrying about it.

Normal is always a relative term.

I have always loved naps. When I was young and thin and healthy. When I was stressed and tired and overwhelmed. When I was overweight and sleep deprived. And now that I am retired. Why? Because I can. It's MY normal.

Take a nap for 2-4 hours every Sunday. Feel awesome. Back to sleep around 9pm, up at 5am.
