Y'all warned me about DMEs...

Post by The Latinist » Tue Apr 29, 2014 6:59 pm

Well, even after all my reading and preparations -- and all of your warnings -- I still got conned at the DME. I was just looking through the menus on my "brand new" S9 Autoset when I came across the "Run Hours" reading. You guessed it: nearly 3000 hours on my machine. I am livid.

Tomorrow afternoon I'll be making my visit to the DME to politely but firmly demand a truly new machine. Anyone have any advice for my visit?

That's shocking. It's over a year old. I'd be livid too.

Maybe something in this thread can help you:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I would make them plug in the new machine & YOU check the run hours there in front of them before you leave with it. I would also ask them for a NEW in box unit & stand there while the program your pressure. They are essentially thieves for selling used goods as new.

If the DME promised you a new machine, let them know that you are contemplating calling your insurance company about the 'bait and switch' tactics and would be recommending that they not send any more patients to this particular DME.

It's worth a try.

I actually called ACHA on one DME who, in writing, promised a respiratory therapist would be available 24 hours a day. The reality was that you got a switchboard after hours that took messages. ACHA was not pleased with the DME.

Also, call your state's Attorney General's office and report this. This is illegal.

Agree you should watch them unseal the box in front of you.

Do report back.

That's interesting because my DME is letting me use a ResMed S9 Elite machine with a heated humidifier which the DME told me was a year old; just curious how would I check on their machine to see how many hours it has on it? The DME didn't leave me any literature; just the machine while my P.R. DS400S was being checked out by techs at Philips Respironics in Pennsylvania. I received papers in the mail yesterday from my DME containing a copy of a repair estimate from Philips Respironics to repair my 6 year old machine; the estimate came to $360.47; I told the DME not to have it repaired since my doctor has already ordered a new sleep study for me; I don't know yet if it's going to be a 2 night study or a split night one but after the new study is complete I hope to qualify for a new CPAP machine. My DME is recommending either a ResMed S9 Elite with heated humidifier and heated hose or a Philips Respironics DS460S; something that can record full data. Depending on what my new diagnosed pressure is I might have to go to a BIPAP.

Hours are shown in the configuration menu in the clinical setup menu.
How to get there is explained here.

Yeah, I imagine they thought I'd never know the difference. Luckily for me I am skilled in google-fu.

While you are checking the Run Hours on the new machine, also check to see whether the Internal Software is the latest version.

Anyone ever getting a new ResMed machine should always check those 2 items BEFORE you sign anything or leave the DME.

And NEVER leave with a machine that does not meet "your" requirements.

It is MUCH easier to get the DME to give you another machine under those circumstances than it is if you have accepted delivery.

Does anyone know what the latest firmware for the S9 is?
