First Time for Periodic Breathing to show

Post by Scootergirl » Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:20 pm

Checked my stats on my cpap this morning - for the first time I have periodic breathing show up at 1%. I was fiddling with my mask last night, would that cause something like that?

I don't think mask fiddling will cause that but transitions between asleep and awake might.
In any case, 1% is pretty far down there in terms of something to worry about.
If it goes on for a long time (more than 10 minutes in a single event for example), then it will be time to discuss it with your sleep doc.

Do you have software to look at your own data?
One of the Encore programs will be more suited to looking at that type of event.
But SleepyHead will also work and gives nice summary information.

You can tell more by looking at the waveform data to see if what you are getting in the report is anything of importance.
When you get a look at the waved data, see about posting an image of the periodic breathing.
Then some more informed commentary could be posted.

Thank you for that reply. I just transitioned to a new laptop and haven't downloaded any software yet- Still getting all my info over onto it. I will definitely post it when I've gotten things set. Thank you again - it gives me an idea of what to look for - I didn't know what the 1% meant.

% of time breathing during the night that meets periodic breathing criteria.
1% isn't much at all.
The fiddling with the mask probably wouldn't do it but being awake might and if you know you were fiddling with your mask then you were awake. Sometimes awake breathing gets the machine to flag stuff that we don't need to worry about.

Periodic breathing flags that the machine does is for the definition of PB and doesn't automatically mean something horrible.
I have seen it flagged and barely meets criteria with zero events of any kind being associated with it.

PB

Periodic Breathing is a Respironics data feature defined as a persistent waning and waxing breathing pattrn which repeats itself between 30 and 100 seconds. The nadir of the breathing pattern is characterized by at least a 40% reduction in airflow from an established baseline flow. The pattern must be present for several minutes before it can be identified as periodic breathing. No therapy adjustments are made in response to periodic breathing.
