Recommendations for external humidifiers for Remstar Auto?

Post by NeedMoreSleep28 » Wed Feb 12, 2014 3:40 pm

Hi everyone,

I currently use a Remstar auto CPAP and am massively unsatisfied with the quality of not only the machine but especially the humidifier. Unfortunately I was foolish enough to have nasal surgery which solved nothing but now I have a difficult time breathing in cold, dry weather. As I live in Chicago this is especially troubling as my hygrometer reads the relative humidity somewhere between 20-30%. I have a room humidifier but it only allows the CPAP to run at a high level of humidity for around 5 or 6 hours before the tank is depleted. Once the tank is about 1/3 depleted it is no longer capable of delivering the level of humidity I require. I usually wake up with extremely dry nasal passages and I think it is contributing to my difficulty sleeping. This problem is not due to mouth breathing and occurs with the use of a nasal mask and a full face mask.

Are there any alternative CPAPS, or external humidifiers that the people of this board would recommend to help solve this problem?

Thank you

Wulfman...

Go to CPAP(dot)COM (the host/provider of this forum) and click on Humidifiers.

Then look for: "HC150 Heated Humidifier With Hose, 2 Chambers and Stand"

Thanks for posting the question. I have been struggling with my humidifier running out for a while this winter and seeing this question prompted me to do something about it.

The HC150 seemed the best way to fix the problem.

So, I checked our host's site and about three others and our hosts had the best price.
I ordered it and will hook it up on Monday when it gets here.

Thanks again NeedMoreSleep28 and Wulfman.

I agree with Den on the F&P HC150. I've been using that humidifier for a few years now, and I love it. Good luck.

Hey guys,

Been thinking again about purchasing this particular humidifier. Are there a lot of problems with rainout? Can it be chained with the humidifier already on my CPAP?

I have a cover on my hose, and I've never had to deal with rainout. (Most folks think of Arizona as hot and dry everywhere in the state, year 'round; but it's not; I live in the mountains, where we have winter and get some snow.)

As far as I know, you can only use one humidifier at a time with the machine. I don't believe you can chain two together.

Well, I got my F&P HC150 external humidifier and tried it for a few nights.

Setting in essentially pass over mode didn't do what I wanted.
Setting the level to a middle value got me sauna like humidity so that was no good.
I did an experiment. Turning it on, unplugging it, and plugging it back in resulted in the humidifier coming on nicely.
So tonight i will try using a timer to turn on power at about 3:00 AM which is about the time my PR tank gets empty and see how that goes.

BTW, it connects between my PR humidifier and my hose and doesn't seem affect pressures. It adds about 18 inches to the overall length.

What did you use to connect the 2 humidifiers together?
I was wondering if one of those hose extension things would work???

Hi Pugsy,

The kit I purchased from CPAP.COM included two chambers and a connector tube that is less than two feet long.
So I connected from the PR machine using that tube to the HC150 and then connected my regular hose to the outlet of the HC150.

The supplied connector has standard CPAP ends so everything fits.

Got my timer so I'll hook up tonight, set the timer, and be good to go.

BTW just a note. The HC150 chambers are one piece assemblies with the metal base permanently attached so cleaning may be an issue if you don't use distilled water. Even then, it may be an issue.

They make a replacement chamber that has a stainless steel base and a much heaver plastic body that comes apart and can really be cleaned. It has a big "O" ring that seals. Really is a nice unit when the supplied chamber get to where you can't clean them to your satisfaction.
