Poll: Official mask lending thread?

Post by djhall » Sat Mar 22, 2014 2:09 pm

One thing you can always count on when reading this forum is at least one person will be actively seeking advice on whether or not they should spend the money to buy a different mask or size just to try it and see if it is better than what they have. I know many (most?) of us have several unused masks that aren't better for us than what we currently use but we've kept around for whatever reason.

Buying a new cushion is a lot cheaper than buying a whole mask, so I'm curious what the other members here would think about a mask lending thread. People who have masks they are willing to lend could post what they have available. People who want to try a mask before they buy it could post a request or PM someone who had already listed one as available. You mail the mask to the person who wants to try it, they buy a new cushion to use with it if they want, and they use it for a while to see if they want to buy one. After that they either mail it back to the owner, arrange to buy it from them, or hold on to it until they can mail it to someone else who wants to try it. The idea isn't so much to sell the masks as it is to get currently unused masks out of storage and circulating among people who want to try them. I know this already happens, but I don't remember seeing a thread where it is clearly encouraged, and I don't know how comfortable people are with the idea of starting a new thread to ask for a loaner.

I think this is a great idea.

I have an Fisher & Paykel Oracle HC451 which someone can "borrow" if they wish. If you like it and want to keep it we'll discuss price (before or after you try it is fine). If you send it back and buy a new one, great. If you hate it, then send it back.

Borrower pays shipping both ways (we'll keep it low unless you want it real fast.)

On an exchange, each person can just pay the shipping at source.

I am not TRYING to sell the Oracle but it might make sense -- more importantly, someone can try it and decide if it is a good mask.

(I have an Innomed Hybrid FFM nasal-pillow/oral mask for backup if my nose stops up and don't need the Oracle really. Obviously, I don't like it much so wouldn't want to "sell" someone on this mask but for someone who NEEDS it then it may be the only viable choice.)

Wow, so far it looks like quite a few people are interested in borrowing other peoples' masks and willing to lend their own as well! If anyone reads this who voted or is inclined to vote that we already have a thread for borrowing and lending masks, would you mind posting the name of the thread that is used for this purpose, or a link to it, so those of us who are interested in this can check it out? I've either missed seeing that thread or assumed it didn't include lending or something.

Fair point. At the time I posted it was running around 80% in favor with most voters in the both category, but the no percentage has since increased quite a bit and I didn't consider the possible implications of page the views to votes ratio. To be honest, I really have no idea how to factor the page views number... how many are new people and how many are the same people checking new posts and search engine crawlers? Do we assume people who didn't vote are presumed to be in the no category or do we assume they have the same percentage distribution as the people who did? I don't know, but it is a valid point.

Umm. I voted positive because I thought it was a great idea.

It's not for me but if it were I think I would have skipped the poll and gone straight to the thread. We don't need consensus here, people who are not interested won't participate, those who are can.

I voted no but why not either turn this thread into the "great mask swap" or start a thread specifically for it?

Good advice. It will either work or it won't and the thread will fade off into the history and die out. As you say, it doesn't NEED consensus to give it a try.

There used to be a thread here for that and I think it was called "Mask Arrayed" or something like that. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I'll bet someone could find it. I am not good at those searches.

I've already given away all the masks that didn't work for me.

Not sure about anybody else but my DME allows me to use a mask for 30 days and if I don't like it I can bring it back and try out a new one. It can go on forever. They just used the masks that people bring back as demos for people that want to try out that type of mask. Not sure if everyone has this option.
