Bed Pillow

Post by Becky913 » Tue Feb 25, 2014 11:28 am

I am doing very well with my new CPAP. I am using the Wisp nasal mask (only goes over nose). The problem I am having is getting comfortable on my bed pillow. If I lay on my side the pillow tends to push on the Wisp. I see you can buy CPAP pillows. Does anyone have any opinions on these or have you improvised your regular home pillow in some way?

Go up to the Search line and put in "bed pillow" and start reading. There are quite a few pillows which have been designed for this therapy and others which also work well.
I've was using a water-based pillow long before I started therapy nine years ago and it has worked well with therapy. It's called the "Chiroflow" pillow and the company also has the "Mediflow" pillow, which is basically the same thing. The height is adjustable by varying the amount of water in it. They were primarily designed for aligning the head/neck/spine. They have a firmness which keeps the head from sinking into the pillow and dislodging the mask position......which is what you want.

Buckwheat pillows work best for me. They are firm enough to support my neck when sleeping on my side and allow the mask to hang slightly over the pillow. I use the Activa mask, which has some flexibility, and this works well with the buckwheat pillows. Buckwheat pillows are also good bolster pillows due to their heaviness. They don't travel as well as other pillows, though.

I have tried sooooo many pillows! The best one if so far is calmly My Pillow. Go online to Mypillow.com and you can select a pillow from there. I have the medium firmness one. Love them! They are made in the USA and my hubby has one too. They are washable and dry able as well.

Good luck

My solution the pillow problem was to fold up a bath towel so I get a quite firm pillow that is about 10 inches square and about 2 or so inches high. I rest on it when on my side so my face with the mask is not supported at all but enough of my head is supported so there is no tilt. The thickness is just about the same as the distance between my shoulder and my ear so my head is supported with my neck straight and not twisted.

With frequent night sweats from another condition not related to apnea, the towel soaks it up and I don't feel so icky. The

I want to bump this up because I tried a buckwheat pillow last night--and it was amazing. The pillow was hard enough so that when I turned my head to sleep on my side, it didn't bother my mask--yet my neck felt so supported. Even thought it felt too firm for my liking, when using it--it worked really well. I am so thankful for all of the CPAPtalk-ers who shared their experiences using the buckwheat pillow (Not just on this thread but previous ones too)

I used to make fun of my grandma because she used a buckwheat pillow, seemed so stone-ages...now I've joined her

I'm a side sleeper and pillow slasher.
I use UM FFM, exclusively.
I've tried every pillow out there.....
this is the best, IMNSHO.
Memory foam pillow purchased wherever you can find it on sale,
modified to my specifications. Side cutouts fit the mask,
cutout in the middle fits onto your shoulder to hold it in place.
Works very well.

Hmmm that might be a good project for my husband. I've tried some pillows suggested here but none seem to work for me so I'm using my latex pillow (which I love) but I've been having neck pain since I started CPAP.

I used to always sleep on my right side, but since using CPAP (about 3 years) I have changed to sleeping on my back and find it very comfortable. I have several down pillows...a couple of firmer ones against the headboard, and then a soft one placed against them at an angle. When I lie back after putting on my yoga headband (to keep mouth closed) and mask, my head makes an impression in the center of the soft down pillow. The bottom edge rises up underneath my neck (if not I give it a bit of a roll on the bottom edge so it does). The sides of the pillow rise up on either side against my ears which muffles sound. I then lay a soft (cashmere?) scarf along the top of my head and both sides of the pillow which creates a soft, cozy head wrap. I sleep on a sheepskin and use a down comforter and fall asleep within minutes. I have rigged up a hose holder directly above my pillows (bent a piece of wire) so the hose goes straight up to the top of the headboard and then over to the machine. This way I am not feeling or fighting with the hose at all. If by chance I turn over to the side wearing the mask, the seal breaks and I get loud squealing noises. Usually that doesn't happen. Good luck figuring out what works for you.
