I just received my Z1, I also bought the Fisher & Paykel HC150 to go with it as well as a battery and DC adapter. Found a discount coupon code so was in for $1187 all included. Blew out my FSA in March. (Hoping for insurance reimbursement).
I am switching from a Resmed Series 8 Autoset 2 CPAP to this. My thoughts for changing were I was tired of getting the full search treatment when I travelled, I also didn't want the awful feeling of having the power go out at my house while I was using therapy.
I had the humidifier with the unit as well as a RedMed Mirage Micro nasal mask. My setting for the pressure is 14.0 if that means anything.
I connected everything up (important to note you now need two outlets with the humidifier) and it looked like I was now conducting a lab experiment. (that HC150 is really spooky).
I turned it on last night and my goodness, is this a flow generator or a whole home generator. Okay it's not that bad but it is definitely louder than the Resmed.
Just for fun I dug out the specs. The Resmed says it can be as loud as 24dB. The Z1 says it's 26dB. I think the HC150 makes it 40 dB (kidding). No way it's only 2dB louder.
I'm going to disconnect the HC150 and try the HME tonight and see if that helps. My throat was pretty dry when I woke up and I was pretty tired. I'm not sure if I'm just getting used to the new system, or it's not as good, or I didn't have the humidifier up as high as it should be (it was on the 2 setting).
I did use the Z breathe option 2 algorithm.
After one night I was disappointed that the transition wasn't as smooth as I liked but I will keep trying over the weekend.
My Z1 (Human Design Medical) 1st night experience
Re: My Z1 (Human Design Medical) 1st night experience
It is kind of hard to do but see if you can listen to both machines while NOT wearing the mask. I would guess they test the close if you measure the noise coming from the machine into the air.icedcorn wrote:I just received my Z1, I also bought the Fisher & Paykel HC150 to go with it as well as a battery and DC adapter. But we do not listen to the machine that way all night. We "listen" to what comes up the hose.
After experiancing much less from the hose installing a bit of compressable air space in the system - well - I am now making my own CPAP muffler.
it is supposed to be quiet when we sleep

Re: My Z1 (Human Design Medical) 1st night experience
I bought a second hand Z1 that was sold because it was too noisy. I tamed the noise by using an inline bacteria filter (https://www.cpap.com/productpage/Respir ... -pack.html) and placing the blower unit on a pillow on the floor. I used it while travelling last week, and I really liked it. I initially did not think I could get used to the exhalation algorithm, but it seems to "learn", and after a while it seemed very similar to the PR560 that I am used to at home. Good luck!
Re: My Z1 (Human Design Medical) 1st night experience
I don't know if this is a defect or not -- but look at my avatar picture. That is the tube adapter that you connect to the hose from the CPAP machine. See that little piece sticking out on the right? That think is literally blowing air out like I have a flat tire. It is extremely loud.
does anyone else with a Z1 have the same issue? Is that a "Feature" or is my tube adapter defective?

Decibels are on a logarithmic scale.
20 Db is a hundred times as intense as 10 Db.
30 Db is 1,000 times as intense as 10 Db.
The difference between 24 Db and 26 Db is indeed substantial.

I think you have that wrong. The dB scale is logarithmic, but so is our perception of sounds, light, pressure, etc. 10 dB is often taken as a doubling of perceived difference. For sound, the "limen" or "just-noticeable-difference" (jnd) is about 1 dB. It varies with intensity (larger at minimum threshold) and frequency. Actually, 3dB is often mentioned as the point where one sound is definately louder than another, so the 2dB difference in specs should be pretty small, all things being equal.chunkyfrog wrote:Decibels are on a logarithmic scale.

But all things are not equal. The minimum threshold varies with frequency, so a low hum is probably inaudible at 30 dB, whereas a hiss at 1000Hz is might be heard at 20 dB or less. Also, a sound profile with a "bump" (extra power centered at one frequency) is more noticeable. So much depends on the profile of the sound.
I don't know how the companies actually measure the sound, but I can guess that they use some sort of weighted average in order to come up with one number that characterizes the sound. However, its next to meaningless when dealing with threshold levels.
And aside from the technical measurement stuff, there's the whole issue of a larger company, selling thousands (millions?) of units, incrementally improving the design over 30 years, versus a startup rushing their first product out eager to show specs as good as the big boys. All I know for sure is that my 560 is essentially silent (the only noise I detect with my Quattro Air is the exhaust vent). In theory, the Z1 should be almost silent.

My adapter does not leak air. Looks to me like a broken or defective adapter. Can you plug it temporarily to see if the noise is reduced?icedcorn wrote:I don't know if this is a defect or not -- but look at my avatar picture. The place I purchased it from confirmed a defect and is sending me out a new adapter.
