Antibaterial UV light in S9 H5i

Post by danielqk » Mon Feb 24, 2014 5:30 pm

I found violet light in my resmed S9 H5i humidifier and wondering this UV light for
antibaterial function? Resmed user guide does not mention this
but in industry is using UV light to kill bateria.

The 2 colors of light in the H5i Humidifier are only to distinguish between the following:

Orange(ish) light - H5i is warm or cooling down (but still warm)

Blue(ish) light - H5i is cool

Those lights do nothing else.

Interesting idea, but I don't think there is enough problem to justify the additional cost.

BTW, when I stayed in Mumbai, my apartment building had a UV system for the drinking water.

How do you know what the cost difference is?

On the ResMed models, the silicon strip around the humidifier seal, plus the conical seals at the inlet and outlet openings are silicon. From what I've heard UV light, as found in sunlight or otherwise, is harmful to silicon.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Were you referring to something else?

No, just the cost/benefit.

My hearing aid conditioner (Dri-Store) has a UV light inside for disinfection. (a vacuum tube, not an LED)
I requested the older model, as the newer ones don't have the light.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_water_disinfection.
The light you see is not the UV, but may be necessary for eye safety. This way, you KNOW it's on!
The invisible component is capable of causing burns on/in the eyes.

Yes, it's just a blue indicator light.

However, the idea of a UV light in the water tank area to help kill germs is an interesting idea. It would be a great idea if you could make it work.

You'd have to make sure the tank and associated parts are all UV resistant. Unfortunately, I think most UV resistant plastic is also UV-blocking, so it might be difficult to make it UV resistant and also have the UV germ killing function still be there.

For people who take reasonable care there is no problem with bacteria in humidifier tanks. Let's not make things too complicated boys.

OK, you don't mind germs in the water tank, we get it.

Most of us don't want them there, even if they theoretically won't get out of the tank and into your body.

I just got back from a trip to Trader Joe's and Target. Certainly I encountered more germs in that one hour than I will encounter from my humidifier tank in the next 100 years. (Not that I will live that long.)

Yes, but they're all natural, holistic, organic, free-range germs, not tank grown artificial CPAP germs.
