Bedside Table Real Estate

Having flunked my sleep study miserably, I am now in the first week of using my ResMed S9 Elite. So here is a question: Has anyone suggested imbedding a clock radio alarm onto the CPAP machine in an effort to conserve endtable real estate? Or an iPod dock? Or a phone handset?

I think I remember reading somewhere about a machine that had a built-in alarm clock... it was on a website I believe so maybe you can find by scouring websites that sell cpap equipment, or the websites of makers, devilbiss, respironics, etc. Good Luck!

I used to the phone on top of the humidifier. Works great as long as you don't pull the machine off the surface you keep it on in your sleep...before I got my own place, space was cramped.

Now I've got my own place (it's my first place), I have my cpap on a tv tray to itself (it is the perfect height for my bed! go figure that a 15 dollar tv tray from Meijer does the trick over some fancy thing) on one side of the bed and another tv tray to put my bedtime reading, phone, tv & bed remotes (adjustable bed), drink, bite guard, etc. It's amazing how much the addition of that second tv tray helped out.

It has often been suggested that the machine be somewhat lower than your head to help prevent rainout. Not sure that matters now. I keep mine on a pull-out shelf on the night table. The shelf hides the machine from view.

To answer your question, yes, the clock idea has been around a number of times. I don't know of any machines that have it.

It is best to have your machine lower than your mattress. I have mine on a small kids plastic step stool to save valuable space on my nightstand, and run the cord right under the stool.

When I was working, I found it better to have my clock radio (specifically the alarm) sitting on my dresser across the room and out of arms reach. I could see the clock from the bed and when the alarm went off, I had to get up to shut it off.

To keep my machine lower than the mattress (downhill for the hose if there is condensation), I put mine on a moderate sized box that holds the machine about 8 inches lower than the bed.

I also blocked the front of the box so that I cannot pull the machine onto the floor (with any reasonable tugging on the hose.)

My phone goes under my pillow to track sleep/wake cycles through best movement (SleepTime by Azumio for Android).

Clock radio is in the center of the bed on built in shelf, which projects time on ceiling but we don't use it for alarm or radio anymore (we each set phones).

BTW, it is not a silly question -- it might SOUND that way to someone who doesn't use a machine.

This is just one of those seemingly trivial details that we all have to work out in order to integrate the CPAP machine into our lives.

We spend 1/3 of our life in bed, so besides getting healthy, we NEED to be comfortable and part of that comfort is making everything as convenient as practical.


I am sure we have all worked out "little ways to reliably adjust our masks" as well. This will vary first by mask type, but also by individual.

There are some ways to push on the nose pillows that work really well, and some ways that do not. We all have to develop these "little tricks".

I have an old side table with two heights. The bottom has my cpap, a drink and odds and ends and the top has a lamp, clock, tissue box, and meds. When I first moved here I had an Industrial chic night table - a short paint splattered ladder. It worked well however but my sister objected and wanted the ladder back.
When I first started cpap therapy I had a loft bed and I put my machine on the top of a book case, held in place with some wires, I figured a drop of 5 feet would not do it any good.

The machine with the clock is the F&P Icon, I have it but use it as my backup/travel machine. My PR 560 is worth the small amount of extra real estate on my nightstand.

I remember seeing a post here of someone who put CPAP in nightstand drawer, open at night, closed during the day. Cool idea.

TV trays are not very stable.

A machine could be easily pulled off of a TV tray because of it's instability.

And a fall from that height could do some damage to the machine.
Or, get water into the machine from the humidifier - which could be even worse.
