ResScan can't find the cardreader in Windows 8.1
I have problem with ResScan finding my cardreader.
A couple of years ago I managed to buy a cardreader, a ACR38U-SPL non CCID, that's compatible with ResScan.
I then had Windows 7 64-bit.
Everything went fine and I was able to transfer data from my Resmed S8 via the datacard.
But after a while ResScan had harder to find the cardreader.
This was increasing when I updated to Windows 8.
Mostly of the time ResScan didn't find the cardreader but now then then it did. Strange...Why only now and then??
Now I have Windows 8.1 64-bit and ResScan hasn't find the cardreader not a single time yet.
But I only had W8.1 for a short while.
I have ResScan latest version 4.3.0.7081
The carddriver was v 1.1.6.2 but I have visited ACS homepage and installed a newer version 1.1.6.3 supporting Windows 8 but this is not helping.
The cardreader turns up correctly every time in the devicemanager so I guess the driver is working properly otherwise it shouldn't, or?
My suspicion is that it's ResScan software that doesn't find the cardreader.
ResScan starts the program Devicescan2.exe who I think is looking for the cardreader?
Is it something faulty here maybe?
I have tested it in Windows 8 compability mode but it doesn't help..
In ACS Quickview I get as follow:
PC/SC functions loaded
Calling SCardEstablishContext...
Success!
Calling SCardListReaders...
Success!
Calling SCardConnect...ACS ACR38U 0
Success!
Calling SCardControl...
Success!
ACS ACR38U 0
Firmware Version: ACR38-1100
Calling SCardDisconnect...
Success!
I'm very puzzled since it worked before.
Any ideas what can be wrong and what to do about it?
Can there be a conflict somewere?
Are there others on this forum that has experienced this problem and managed to find a solution?
All help appreciated.

I'm inclined to think your card reader is dying, or has died. That would be one reason why you started to have problems in 7. Have you tried a new card? Does Windows see the card reader in My Computer?Kris Persson wrote:I have problem with ResScan finding my cardreader.

Re: ResScan can't find the cardreader in Windows 8.1
I have no recollection that it ever have come up as a disk in "My computer". Not even when it worked.
It's not a SD-card, They appears as a disk.
It's Resmed's datacard.
But it does appear in the Device manager every time and it says that the device is working properly.
And in Quick View the reader is found with it's firmware and it also says that a card is inserted.
I don't think it should if the reader was faulty.
And I have tested with another data card. Same result

I'm also inclined to think this is a Windows 8 problem. I have a netbook with Windows 8.1, and nothing I could do with the reader got it working in ResScan 4.3, so that was a turd. My doc was nice enough to let me borrow his old reader, and this explains why he could not get the data off of my S8 smart card and immediately had me get an S9 last month.idamtnboy wrote:I'm inclined to think your card reader is dying, or has died. Still, though, I would at least like to get some of my historical data from this old machine. I have Windows XP running in a VM on my MacBook Pro, so I will be taking that with me to my appointment next week. We shall see if it is a bad card/reader (unlikely) or Windows being a pain (seems likely based on my research)
I'll follow up with my findings just so folks are aware of a workaround if nothing else. With the near-zero availability of the old generic readers (and expensive pricing of the official ones with nearly no compatibility on newer operating systems) it seems like the S8 in general should be relegated to backup/travel status at this point.

Re: ResScan can't find the cardreader in Windows 8.1
I just got data from my card. But only once. It seems it's the same problem with Windows 8.1 as in 7. The card can only be read occasionally.
But the card reader are allways present in the devicemanager, working.

Did you try the ACR38 new driver package 4.0.0.0?

For what it is worth - my wife's Rescan card does show up in My Computer with the drives but with a tiny "SD" symbol next to it. You can open it and see the files. We have Win 8 64 bit on our laptops. Win 8.1 could be different but I would be surprised if it is.

You have a SD-card? Mayby a S9 machine? That's totally different. I have Resmed's own card that goes with the S8.
Re: ResScan can't find the cardreader in Windows 8.1
I tried getting data from my S8 smartcard today in my Windows XP SP3 VM with zero luck. Tried with the ResMed-supplied drivers and the newer ACS 4.0.0 bundle drivers, still nothing.bighead wrote:I'm also inclined to think this is a Windows 8 problem. At this point, with my card and my doctor's reader, it looks like the card is shorted or the reader is dead. It could be something funky with VMware Fusion's USB support, but I was able to flash a Sony Ericsson phone back in the day using VMware when Parallels wouldn't do it. Since there hasn't been any major discussion of issues with Windows XP, I'm probably going to give up on getting my historical data at this point.
My only other thought is if someone has a direct-connect USB cable for the S8 and isn't looking to make money from it, I'd be more than happy to do a "pay it forward" thing and send it to the next person looking to get their data off of an old machine. It could at least give weirdos like me a chance to pull their data off old hardware to have a better baseline for later treatment efficacy.

Re: ResScan can't find the cardreader in Windows 8.1
When I made my post above I didn't realize you had a Smart card not an SD card.
This may be a long shot but it worked for me when I had a smart card.
Have you checked to see if the card reader service is running and set to automatic?
If not try right clicking on "Computer ' then left clicking on "Manage" then "Services and Applications" then "Services" . Scroll down to find the card reader service and see if it's running. You can set it to Automatic by left clicking on the service and then right clicking on Properties.
