Automatic startup on ResMed S9??

Post by KarenK » Sat Feb 15, 2014 8:30 am

I inherited a RemStar ProM w c-flex as a travel machine, but my main machine is a ResMed S9 Autoset. The RemStar surprised me one night when it started up automatically when I took a deep breath, and I later found out that the previous owner had it set up that way. Can that be done to my S9 Autoset as well??

They say in the manual that it might not work with FFM, but I use a FFM and a hybrid FFM and it picks up my breathing every time.

1 of the updates to the internal software of the ResMed S9 AutoSet was to make Smart Start work with FFMs.

So, if you have a machine that was NOT 1 of the very earlier manufactured ones, Smart Start WILL work with a FFM.

Mine seems to work well with both FF masks and nasal masks. Just set it to automatic startup. When you pull your mask off it will turn off automaticaly after a few seconds. Sometimes this will increase how the machine perceives your AHI.

I use a Pilairo nasal pillow. Can't seem to get it to switch onto SmartStart, but I have a call in to my DME.

Karen are you able to access the clinician menu? that's where the setting lives.

Hold down the bottom button (with the checkmarks) and the dial button at the same time. That'll unlock the settings. Turn the knob once to access Options, then press the knob. Then turn it again until you reach SmartStart. You can then set it to either "on" or 'patient". Setting it to "patient" is going to give you an option to do it in the patient-level settings.

I'm not near my machine right now but I can get you a video of how to turn SmartStart on if you still have trouble.

That seems to be what I am doing, BUT it never changes to on, it reverts to a "mask" setting of a smiley face.

I took both machines in to my DME and he set them for me...he did exactly what I was trying to do numerous times, but U must have been doing something wrong. Anyway, thanks for help and suggestions.

SmartStart Start almost always works on my S9. The SmartStart Stop often doesn't. I believe it's do to the pressure.

From the manual:
SmartStart/Stop is enabled but the device does not stop automatically when you remove your mask

Incompatible mask system being used. Only use equipment recommended by ResMed.
The patient is using a nasal pillows mask with a set pressure less than 7 cm H2O.
It's usually less of a hassle just to push the button.

I used it for the first time last night, and it did not STOP on its own.
