Inspired by the many stories I've read here, I made a hose hanger for $9.00, using nothing more than a vice, a Vice Grip, and a little elbow grease. Here's a picture of the finished product:
I have seen some hose hangers you can purchase which have a triangular base that slips between the mattress and the box spring, and it struck me that I might be able to bend a piece of steel rod into something similar. (I originally went looking for aluminum rod -- much easier to bend -- but could only find a piece 3 feet long, which was too short).
I purchased a 6 foot long, 3/16 inch steel rod from a big box store (rhymes with Toes). The main vertical shaft is 2 feet 4 inches; the top horizontal "hanger" is six inches (actually, it extends four inches, then I made two one-inch bends to form the "U" that hold a daughter's hair tie that wraps around the hose). The remaining 3 feet 2 inches forms the triangular base (about one foot for each side of the triangle).
I just put the rod into the vice and started making the necessary bends. (Note: remember, physics is your friend. Whenever making a bend, make sure the short part of the bend is being held in the vice, and you are holding the longer part in your hands. So for the first bend -- what became the horizontal hanger end -- I put about 6 inches of the rod into the vice, with 5 1/2 feet sticking straight up in the air. I then grabbed the long end and pulled it down to a 90 degree angle). I only needed to use the Vice-Grip pliers to pinch the "U" a bit tighter.
The measurements I used fit my bed, so yours may differ. But I was surprised how easy it was; the base is securely held between the mattress and box spring, and last night's test run went perfectly.

When I looked at the link I thought 'Well, that's a nice store bought one, now where's the DIY one?" and only after reading your note realized that it was the same one. Really well done!

What was you rebuilding in your other photo bucket pictures? Nice job on the hose hanger.

Nice job. Handy when it comes to creating spread sheets for accounting, but totally useless in the area you're good at. I have to buy something like that.

Re: DIY Hose Hanger
Wow! Nice job! I love that the triangle is large and therefore less likely to rotate like my travel buddy hose hanger does. Oh you are the clever one.
