Cold like syptoms?

Post by kona0197 » Fri Feb 14, 2014 2:57 am

It seems I am getting a very sore throat and runny nose while using my machine. I have the humidifier turned off so a cold air is running in my nose. Any suggestions? Should I use a little heat or turn on the heated tubing?

Thanks!!

Hi Kona,

Might be worth trying.

A relative's sleep doctor also suggests trying to either raise or lower the pressure to see if that helps. Might be somethign for you to try.

I hope you feel better.

Maybe it is just... cold-like symptoms unrelated to CPAP?? I don't know about where you are, but around here a LOT of people currently have cold-like symptoms.

By the way if this is a cold they say not to use a CPAP device during sickness yet I need to get in 4 hours a day for 21 days within the next month or less. Any way to trick the machine so it looks like I used it so I can aviod getting it taken?

Sounds to me to be "another" excuse not to use the machine. You have been making excuses for 7 years....Grow up!

Maybe your nasal mucosa are just rebelling about getting all dried out.
Use the humidifier...which heated hose do you have? If you have a heated hose you can still add humidity to keep the nasal mucosa happy and just cooler air if you wish. No need to sacrifice moisture.

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/995056-treatment

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)-induced rhinitis

This therapy, prescribed for sleep apnea, can cause increased flow through the nasal cavity, which, in turn, causes dry mucous membrane, overproduction of the mucus, and congestion.

Appropriate use of such machines should be ensured, including evaluation of pressure used, regular maintenance, and humidification of the air delivered. Nasal gel is recommended to prevent drying of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity.

LSAT - Enough. Either contribute something positive or be quiet.

Pugsy thanks for the advice. It really does not feel like a cold. Thanks for the info.

Who says? I find with a cold or sinus problem that CPAP helps keep my sinuses clear, sleeping/breathing easier and reduces symptoms. I have not seen a warning about using CPAP while sick.

Would like to see a reference.

Yeah, I've never heard that, either. Another thought. My sleep doc insisted I use saline nasal spray every night before going to sleep. It works very well to keep nose clear, and contains no drugs like the oxymetazoline that is found in Vicks Sinex and Afrin that can make you dependent on the spray after only a few days' use. I have used saline every night for over 3 years and have never had a problem.

I am still fairly new at this however early on I was experiencing a bit of a sore throat and runny nose alternating with congestion. I also was getting a bit of nose bleeding. I too was not using the humidifier. Two things helped me a lot. First I started using the Humidifier and settled in on a setting of 2 that seems best for me. Second, and what I think helped the most, was that I started using Ayr saline nasal mist twice a day. Once at bedtime and once in the morning. My congestion and sore throat rarely occurs now and the nose bleeds and trace blood that would show have for the most part disappeared.

I read somewhere in my manuals that if you have a cold you should stop using CPAP until it clears up. Or maybe it was one of my masks manuals. Looking into it now.

If you have a cold you may want to use a different mask for comfort reasons (I use my Quattro when I have a cold because using my Liberty with the nasal pillows makes my congestion worse and increases anxiety). However, there is really no reason not to use CPAP with a garden variety cold.

Did you try heated humidification last night? Did that help? I set my humidifier at 74 degrees and that helped a lot with the congestion I was having this week.
