Dry humidifier tank

Post by grillhead » Sat Jan 25, 2014 11:37 am

Last night, I turned my humidifier up to 3 (Resp System One). I was awakened by the dry humidifier tank smell this morning. I had only slept maybe 6-6.5 hours. It shouldn't have went dry that quickly, should it? I'd hate to think of what it would do on 5.....

I see from your profile that you're using a nasal mask. If your mouth fell open and your therapy air was escaping, it doesn't take long to empty a HH tank. The machine senses a leak and increases airflow to compensate. The more airflow, the more water that goes out with it.

Increased humidity can contribute to more nasal congestion......which contributes to more mouth breathing/leaking and consequently more loss of therapy air.

I use an elastic bandage to keep my mouth closed, so that's not the issue. I've had this happen a couple of times before, and I've wondered if I have a defective humidifier....

I have the same unit as yours. I live in Minnesota. We have very dry air inside the house during winter months when the furnace is running so much of the time. I also keep my humidifier setting at "3", and for the past two months or so, my humidifier tank is just barely over the heating plate when I have slept 8 hours with my nasal mask on. If I had slept 9 hours, I am sure it would have been bone dry,

During the summer months when the ambient humidity and dew point are high, my humidifier's water tank will only have used between 1/3 and 1/2 of a tank with the same hours of use overnight. But in the summer, my bedroom window is usually open at night.

If NOT using classic mode where more water is used because more heat is used..and not using the heated hose at higher humidity setting....

I would be worried about a humidifier that was using the new system one humidification mode at a setting of 3 and have it use all the water...and I know for sure I topped it off (been known to forget it on occasion)...unless your ambient room humidity qualified for high desert.

Now remember...our furnaces will dry out our ambient room humidity and if your household humidity was extremely dry for some reason...it might play a factor in water usage but I would still worry about the humidifier when using the new system one humidification mode all by itself. When I was using mine at a setting of 5 it was rare that the tank would use that much water even with 8 hours of use. That mode just doesn't use much water ...at least when compared to other modes.

My hubby uses his system one at setting 4-5 and uses about 1/3 to 1/2 nightly. I would be worried about a tank using so much in one night.

Our furnace is old, so when it's dry outside, it is dry inside. (no fancy HVAC with a humidifier)
My cheapie hygrometer can help me predict how much water I will need.
I have to add water if I get to sleep longer than usual,

Will it cause damage to the humidifier if it dries up before wake up time?
Oh, it has never dried to the point of smelling.

My tank has run dry (or nearly so) several times. It is never for long, as the smell wakes me up, and I have to get up and add water.

Check for leaks with SleepyHead. You can still have leaks even with a chin strap.

During cold weather, room humidity is often lower, and water will evaporate faster.
