scalp problems

Post by carojae » Sat Jan 25, 2014 12:17 am

I've developed this flaky skin rash under the area's of my head gear / nasal mask from the front side of my ears to the back of my head following my strap exactly.

Anyone know what to do about this? I have tried Scalpacin with very little luck. OTC dandruff shampoo's haven't done anything special. I've never had dandruff or any similar problems before this and I am starting to feel like I have something wrong with me. It itches all the time.

Is there a medicine for this?

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo is wonderful. It smells clean and is very healing.

I also got contact dermatitis under my headgear straps early on in my therapy (in 2012). Red, inflammation, etc. A few weeks of prescription Nizoral shampoo and a prescription topical steroid cream pretty much took care of the acute phase of it, along with slipping a piece of cotton under the straps so the neoprene strap wasn't contacting my skin. However, my scalp has been at least mildly itchy ever since, with no visible sign of rash, flaking, or anything. Doc has no idea why.

Since I don't want to keep using steroid cream and Nizoral, I do sometimes use tea tree oil shampoo, with mixed results. I haven't tried the Paul Mitchell brand yet, may do that.

Google Pap Cap (or try a forum search for it). It's a thin cap you can wear under your mask (like an old swim type but not heavy rubber) and it might help. If not you might want to ask a dermatologist, but be careful of antihistamine fixes as they can 'fight' with sleep problems.

Talk to a dermatologist; they'll be able to test it and give the best course of treatment so it clears up and doesn't come back

Haven't you tried something like Nizoral shampoo? Have a look at the guidelines, e.g. on Canadian Pharmacy. It seems it can help with your problem. Nevertheless, if it really disturbs you, the best idea would be to visit your dermatologist. Good luck!
